Stebel Horn

For anyone wondering if they should get a stebel horn I highly recomend it. I also have included some pictures. I mounted mine under front headlights. If you look closely under front lights there is a bolt that hold a piece of plastic. If you remove the bolt you can then use that area to mount you horn and bolt right into the MC. Also this piece moves with the forks so no worries about forks hitting it as you turn the horn turns so no issues with clereance.

You might also want to check clearance with the forks fully compressed.

+1 on the zip ties on brake lines would give me pause.

I checked clerance I wieght 190 and sat on MC when on stand and pushed down i know it looks close but actually a good 4 to 5 inches of space so unless you slam down after hard wheelies I think you will be fine. The zip tie is on as a back up just in case nut breaks I won't lose horn I can hear it slam around long enough to stop and pull off the wires and store until it can be fixed. i hope that never happen but just in case.

I did clean up the mounting...I didn't want anyone to think it was stupid or something...

I do not like the look on the outside sorry. My mount is secure and not in the way plus almost impossible to see unless you bend way down and look for it otherwise not noticeable so no change to look of MC. I wanted a loud horn and its plenty loud there right in front plenty of air and not blocking the radiator fins. Plus I plan on putting on decals and LED lights so the outside mount would mess that up for me.

I love my Stebel horn that's mounted in a similar location to yours. My write up is available HERE. The key to my install is that the bracket puts the horn rearward to where it's almost dragging on the radiator so that it (the horn) will clear the fender.

I can't really tell from your pictures, but it looks to me like your horn will hit the front fender during hard braking. Just bouncing the forks while parked in your driveway won't move the forks nearly as much as hard braking will. And having that horn hit while braking hard will be a real bummer when you can no longer steer the bike, not to mention damage to the plastic fender. :blink:

To check clearance, you should ideally pull the springs out of the forks and allow the front end to drop to the limit. Or an easier method is to do a very hard stop with the front brakes (preferably without the horn installed) and then measure up the fork from the dust seal to the line where the dirt starts on the fork (the dust seal will wipe the fork tube clean up the point where it stopped going into the outer tube). Then keeping the ruler parallel to the fork, measure the shortest distance between the bottom of the horn and the fender to check whether there's sufficient clearance.

Agree with Harald.

There's precious little room in the front of an FJR. As much as I love the stebel (have had one on the two previous bike to the feej), and after doing tons of research... decided to go with the 2 PIAA's recommended on this forum.

Honestly, they are almost as loud! pretty easy to install (use the upper hole, not the one where the oem are), and no relay. Yes, I'd prefer the stebel. And yes they can be split apart with the slight delay etc etc. But for me anyway, the PIAA fits the bill just fine. And absolutely no worries during emergency braking... none at all.

Good write up though, don't mean to detract from your thread. But this is an issue we all face (re the lack of room)... whatever you do, don't limit your ability to stop in an emergency!

instead of putting zip ties on the lines you should just put the zip tie around the grip and lever. It will work better.

Been using this set up for a bit and no issues. Horn has not hit plastics no matter how hard I brake. Matter of fact the only issue I have had is that mt MC bottoms out on the center stand if I hit a hard dip in road becuase I lowered it 1.5 inches. I can live with that rather metal center stand hit then plastics on bottom hit.
