2x times now, the speedo needle has failed to sweep at key on but would indicate once underway. This morning, the tach failed to sweep and failed to work once running until after 40 or so seconds. Always first thing in the morning, ambient temp ~55 to 60 deg F. 2006 early 'A' model with 9250 on the odo.

Anyone else having issues with instrument cluster? Any idea to the cause? TIA.

I recall someone mentioning a similar problem with one when they first came out. Yamaha replaced the cluster.

Yo, Mr. C ...

Are you affected by the 17 mpg instant reading? And have you done the warranty replacement of the cluster?

Just a thought - that might fix the problem. If you have a later model that is not affected by the technical service bulletin, you seem to have a warranty repair.

I have not experienced the behaviour you describe with my 06.

Let us know what happens

I am affected by the 17 mpg thing and it hasn't been repaired yet.... I'll call Powerhouse at 0900 and see what info they have then post back here. Thanks guys!

I have had my speedometer stick a couple of times. Always just after start up. No problems with the tach. so far. I also have the 17 mpg problem. :(

IIRC, that is also one of the symptoms of a bad ignition switch. I don't know why, but the speedo and tach "sweep" functions are affected. If it happens again, try jiiggling your key and cycling the ignition on and off. At least that would tell you if it was the switch...then get it replaced with much haste and vigor.

My 06 clocks were changed to solve the 17mpg bug, and the new cluster has failed 5 / 6 times now, mostly speedo not sweeping / sometimes tacho as well, then when riding after 40 / 50 miles or so both clocks stop working altogether and the temp guage segments disappear, they've re-fitted my old clocks to test if prob gone and will then replace with another set, but looks like mines NOT an isolated case then.

Mine have done this twice now on cold startup. Turning the key on/off caused them to sweep correctly. This may drive me to have the 17 mpg bug-fix replacement I otherwise would ignore. :angry2:

One of those threads that would benefit other board members by the author putting '06 in the thread title.

.....tweaked.

Agreed.

FWIW, I called a local dealer (Stadium Yamaha) that I've been meaning to try. The service manager knew of the TSB, verified my VIN is in the affected range, placed the order for the new cluster, and promised to call when it arrives to schedule the install. So far so good...

Have you tried this???

The company that builds the '06 instrument panel for Yamaha really dropped the ball. I haven't heard of any problems with the earlier model tachs and speedos.

Yamaha made so many changes on the '06 that they were almost offering a new model.

My '06 has about 6k miles and recently the tach needle started sticking, just like you describe. Doesn't do the sweep at ignition on. Stays at 0 for a few miles, then suddenly starts working.

I have the 17 mpg problem too, not yet fixed.

This sticky tach seems like a mechanical problem, not an electrical problem. But I don't know if this is a mechanical tach or not, so call me clueless. Where would you lubricate it?

I'm curious, of the folks having the tach\speedo glitch on an '06, how many also have done Barbarian jumper mod? The tach on my bike has stayed at zero for the first few miles in the morning for the past two days now, and then started working normally. It may be coincidence, but I just did the jumper mod last weekend, and I'm wondering if a somewhat loose connection in the ECU gang box might contribute to this. I might try reseating the connector, making sure all pin sockets are fully out and securely locked in place in the connector.

I did the Barbarian mod on my '06 some time ago. No sticky needles until about 3K miles.

I had my cluster replaced last week and so far, no more repeats of the sticky needles.

With the old cluster, I could get the "key on sweep malfunction" to happen fairly consistently. Since the swap, I can not reproduce it. I hope it stays gone.

First occurance, 06 AE model -- tach stuck at zero on key-up. (speedo was fine)

Re-keyed -- stayed at zero. started riding -- after a few minutes -- all was back to normal.

Never had the 17mpg problem -- so that's not it.

I had a weird thing happen with mine. I didn't notice if the needles swept or not, but while the tack, speedometer and odometer quit working. When I shut it off and restarted it was fine. It never happened again. I had the cluster replaced about 7,000 miles ago for the 17 mpg fix. No problems since then.
