I have performed the Trooper mod on my FJR but was wondering if anyone had gone in and done any other mods to the factory system that they were happy with. I am not asking about aftermarket slip-on mufflers, but any "tricks" to the system itself. Thanks.

Quit wasting your time trying to modify the mufflers. It only takes about 10 minutes to completely remove them :)

Remove them? Oh yeah, that'll make me real popular with the neighbors, not to mention my wife. Not looking for excessive noise, maybe just a little less backpressure. Anyone done any mods between the mufflers and the stock headers?

Way back when....in the beginning...someplace in the recesses of my memory.....

Someone has split the cat "can" and removed the convertor material allowing a free flow to the mufflers. As to how successful that was for horsepower (per dyno testing) I have no idea. That's about the only thing you could do to allow a more free flowing exhaust.

That's why some have gone to the trouble of installing a complete system: header & slip ons.

The catalytic convertor is a major restriction in the exhaust system.

I thought about it pretty hard, (modifying stock cans further) I think drilling a hole or holes straight through would probably be best for flow, but sound like crap. EBay has plenty of stock cans for cheap if I screwed it up too bad. I have never heard of anyone taking them off completely and leaving them off, but I am pretty new around here. Aftermarket cans are pricey. I really like the vance hines cs1, those are cool. Opting to save my money for them and be satisfied with the trooper mod for now. The sound is cool, but its a few extra ponies I really want. Hayabusa is in my future, but in addition to the FJR, not as a replacement. I hope the holeshots fit vance hines. Drill them stockers out and let us know, I'm rooting for ya!

I went this route

Stock quiet when I want it for cruising, a roar when I'm getting on it, somewhere in between when I'm splitting traffic.

My PC speakers don't do it justice, sounds like a formula bike when opened up. Puts the Harley noise to shame, when I want.

Wow Droptail...The stuff people around here come up with. I donno if that's nuts, hilarious or freaking awesome. Maybe a little of each, but definately a first.

UP - You best get flame proof boots or burn your heels off. :p

Droptail - That is a trick set up, but what's the purpose, the noise? Does it help perormance at all? It does sound pretty cool and a little too loud, but....

Ya know the interesting thing is here…. I recently sold my old 2005 non-ABS Feej that had 2 Bros Racing CF cans since the day I bought it. I put stock mufflers back on the bike and sold it. I bought another 2005 ABS with stock exhaust, I have yet to swap the exhaust for the CF cans. It’s running great, sounds great, I’m leaving it alone for now with the CF cans taking a rest. ;)

Reasons for this?

A stock quiet machine is way too boring for this hot-rodder/gearhead all the time. I get a big kick (and so does anyone else thats around) out of jumping on it and having the bike go from a whisper to a roar as it sweeps past about 6000 rpm. Its unique, and I like that.

I have always found some extra hidden top end power of an engine by reducing the back pressure and giving it more air and fuel. Its a noticeable kick in the pants.

Having recently developed tinnitus, I need it quiet while cruising most of the time.

I have found a big advantage to having it part way open/loud and heard by other cars when I split traffic when the freeway is stopped here on the 101. Its like the parting of the seas when I open up the valve part way.

My friend always now has me go first, and is amazed. The idiots riding the white line don't have an excuse anymore. The Harley guys have trained them well. Speaking about Harleys, I now turn their heads when I open it up.

Don't want a ticket which will start up here soon in CA for noisy bikes.

OMG!! I love it!! Reminds me of the old cable cutouts that used to be advertised in HotRod Magazine. You ought to do a "how to" on this mod so we can "deserve" the bad rep that the open pipe guys give us!

That is cool, a how to would be awesome. With the trooper mod for when I want it kinda normal, then cutouts when I wanna be ignorant...Trooper.
