stock muffler modification

fwiw I have been trying to come up with an idea for improving the sound from my stock cans. I measured the inside of the can back to the baffle. it is right at 12 inches. With this in mind I went to Home Depot, tools area and purchased a 7/16 diameter by 12 3/16 inch drill bit. By placeing the drill to give me as much lenght advantage I was able to drill one hole per muffler. Listen to the sound and ride a bit. The sound had improved and was very mellow.

After riding a bit decided to go for two holes per can. Sound is louder but not overly so. I am pleased with outcome. Just wanted to share the moment. It beats spending $200.00 plus for the UK mod. Cheers !!!

Ya did a "BAFFELECTIMY". On my Concours i used a horseshoe

stake, beat it in with a hammer. Sounded much better. Who's

going to be the first to try it on a FJR?

I actually gutted my intruder's mufflers. Drilled out the rivets tapped out the silencers and cut them clean off. then i increased the output opening. did all this in as small a steps as i could and the end result was actually amazing. I ended up with a classic clug clug throaty HD sound. Not overly loud unless you really go WFO (of course I never blip in my neighborhood either, thats just rude IMO)

Raodhammer here; Pictures are hard to do where the sun don,t shine; however if you take a small maglite and focus it into the can you will see the stock baffle/endplate. This where you will drill your holes. I did mine at the 7 oclock position on both cans, then followed up with another hole at 1 oclock on both cans. As I said the sound is very mellow and doesnt upset the dogs or neighbors. As for the risk of ruining your cans, I don,t think so. No guts, no glory we are after all motorcycle riders nad pleased to be on two wheels. Good luckand good riding.

The people who hang out on this forum have a real distaste for the "loud pipe" thing.. i.e "Loud Pipes Save Lives" crap..

The members here believe that to save lives, riders should be wearing protective gear and refining their skills... We stay away from the "weekend Hell's Angel" mentality, and want no part of the unshaven thundering herd or bad ass biker image.

That's why some of the guys have poked a little fun at you.

Well....I "hang" out on this forum

I wear full protective clothing...full face helmet...riding boots, regardless of the ambient temperature

I have taken msf courses...read everything I can related to improving my riding skills

I don't belong to the Hell's Angels

But I do LOVE the sound of my LOUD aftermarket exhaust....Go figure :dribble:

Oh, and did I mention that I stayed at a HolidayInn Express last night!

What Roadhammer did was tried to improve the sound of his bike, not open the sucker up so everyone would know he has a small penis and wants attention!!

I too Like things a little exhaustier sounding. My dodge neon Has a stainless Borla racing Muffler. My Dodge Dakota with the little 318 had No Muffler to speak of (sold to buy the FJR)... baffled tail pipe still with the cat converter though. My connie, I ran a 1 inch Uni bit. down and took 1 inch out of the baffle. I have to admit when I went to the dealer to look at the FJR. I took a small LED flash light and peered up the tailpipe. I don't like loud harleys. (although a stock harley sounds simply awful) I don't noise up the neighbor hood and I try very hard not to offend others with my noise... I Keep it on the mellow mild side. I just like to hear the exhaust. I thought the stock pipes on the Fjr had a really nice sound. Just a tiny bit louder would be cool. Not willing to drill where no one has drilled before. At least on my brand new Fjr.
