The people who hang out on this forum have a real distaste for the "loud pipe" thing..

"Harley straight pipe" loudness sucks. But a sweet sounding motorcycle is a thing of beauty. Face it, the stock FJR is a little south of sweet... needs a little help.

+1 the pipes the JFR arent bad but they remind me of techno rock of the 80's; lacks a certian depth of sound

fwiw I have been trying to come up with an idea for improving the sound from my stock cans. I measured the inside of the can back to the baffle. it is right at 12 inches. With this in mind I went to Home Depot, tools area and purchased a 7/16 diameter by 12 3/16 inch drill bit. By placeing the drill to give me as much lenght advantage I was able to drill one hole per muffler. Listen to the sound and ride a bit. The sound had improved and was very mellow. After riding a bit decided to go for two holes per can. Sound is louder but not overly so. I am pleased with outcome. Just wanted to share the moment. It beats spending $200.00 plus for the UK mod. Cheers !!!

My question is, what does this do to preformance? I though these bikes were engineered to have the proper back presure.

Not nearly all of us. In fact there's quite a few with aftermarket slip-ons and such. And not all of us subscribe to the "All The Gear All The Time" thing either. There just happens to be a very vocal percentage who make it seem that way.

I ain't baggin' on anyone who likes quiet pipes or wears their Stitch into the shower and everything. Do what thrills ya. But speak for yourself, instead of stating your opinions in terms of "What folks around here think". :glare:

I remember reading that when Honda shipped the original Goldwings to America that they thought the bike was just TOO quiet for this market. So they did some experiments involving a hammer and a piece of broom handle. When they got the sound right they marked the handle at that length and supposedly used that technique on all the bikes shipped over here.

So what does that mean for us?....well...maybe that there is a precedence for Japanese bikes being a bit too quiet for the American consumer's tastes.

I deffinatly do feel loud pipes save lives, but I am a Fan of a Muscular sounding exhaust note. There is a difference, however some of the older folk around here don't seem to think so <_<

I highly doublt that 2 7/16th inch holes in the baffles is gonna make a shit load of difference to some one following him. But hey, mabey you just discovered a way of thinning out the packs a bit!!!

I think that is asking for the pipes to rust more quickly as the finish is no longer protecting the steel in the baffles. Plus resale....no friggin way would I buy such an expensive bike where someone drilled holes in the pipes. Makes you wonder what other bubble gum and duct tape is holding the thing together.

I'm not trying to dogpile you at all, just questioning if this is a well thought out mod and making others aware of possible consequences of doing this.

Sometimes we get excited about something in our heads, do a mod, and realize "DOOOOHHHHH!!!!!", shouldn't have done that.

I'll save the talk about what sounds I prefer. It's all personal preference.
