Maybe this is a very ignorant question, but it's not Friday yet, so here goes. Can't you get a temporary registration? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who bought a new bike and rode it home with no plate, and a temporary registration slip with all pertinent info tucked into my pocket. Gotta be a way.

On a humorous (to me, not to him) note, a former co-worker was loading his Hardly Ableson into the back of his pickup. Laid a nice, long 2 X 12 down for a ramp. Jumped on the bike, fired 'er up, and started up the plank. Oops, forgot to let the bike warm up, and it hiccupped 3/4 of the way up the plank, and stalled, stopping all forward motion. Not that it would have mattered unless he was 7 foot 19 inches tall, but he was a relatively short guy of 5'6" or so. Bike stops on the plank.....hmmm, trying to put his feet down, but he doesn't have a 68" inseam. BOOM, tips over sideways off his ramp. On the ground, bike all doinked up, plus a separated shoulder and several contusions for him. We thought it was a lot funnier than he did when he related the story to us. :lol:

Not ignorant at all. During a 3 week bike trip my wife suddenly decided to upgrade from an EX250 to an EX500. Fay Myers Motorcycle World in Denver supplied the bike with a temporary plate (good for 60 days), rode the rest of the trip on that and got plates when we got home.

I don't think I would stuff my new FJR into the back of a minivan to save $10.

* 7/30 DAY INTRASTATE/INTERSTATE TRANSPORT PERMITS - A 7/30 –Day Intrastate/Interstate Transport Permit is a multiple permit for use as a non-resident, drive-away or intrastate permit. The permit allows out-of-state purchasers to operate newly purchased vehicles from the place of sale to a destination outside Illinois for 30 days. An intrastate/Interstate Transport Permit may also be issued for a non-registered first or second division vehicle for the purpose of moving it within the State of Illinois. Any second division vehicles operating on a Intrastate/Interstate Transport Permit may operate only on empty weight. Permits are available at Secretary of State facilities for $10 each.

Anybody done it? Any tips?
I know somebody will ask, why would you put a perfectly good bike in a minivan? I'm picking up my new to me 08 in Chicago Monday and have to get it back home to Kitchener ON Canada, and I won't have plates.

I figure I'll need to remove the windshield, mirrors, maybe lower the bike on the fork tubes, let some air out of the front tire................

My question was why would you buy a Caravan..... :rolleyes:

My father used to have 3 of them!! Had a friend in England find them and ship over to him...most unfortunate that he sold them all before I could ride them..... :angry:

 
Do it right. Find a nice, full-size hack...maybe a BMW 1150 hack or something, and have the rig converted to a flat-bed. Add a front wheel chock and tie down loops and voila! B)

 
This is why folks own pickups. I suggest beg-borrow-steal.

That said, the VA DMV gives bonafide license plates when you order personalized plates. I'll send you my plate good thru October for a small fee. B) Just meet me in the alley in 10 minutes.

 
Temporary plates in Ontario are a big sticker you buy at your local licence office for $15.... you must have insurance. Or, you can take a plate off any bike and use it, you have 6 days then to transfer it to the new bike.

I'm hoping you're familiar with the import process and know the border folks want paperwork faxed to them 72 hrs. in advance.

I just went outside & measured my 2003 T&C and 2004 FJR. T&C has about 36" from the rear door threshold lip to the top of the door opening. The FJR measured about 48" from the floor to the top edge of the fairing minus windshield and mirrors. You'd have to let A LOT of air out of the tires to go in the back. :rolleyes: The side door is about 42 inches, but you'd never make the corner going in.

You might be able to disassemble the whole bike and get it in, though...

Did you get this bike? I think I emailed the owner a few times while I was shopping. I think there was only one 08 in Chicago when I was shopping.

If you pack the beast in the van, you've gotta post some pics!!!

When I was in the military and attending school, one of my buddies had his parents deliver his XLCH Sportster to the base -- a cross-country trip with the Sporty (completely) dis-assembled in the trunk of a big '60s American sedan.

It took us a couple weeks to re-assemble the bike in a farmers shed, off-base, on evenings and week-ends -- but then we had wheels...!

I had one of these (something similar) for years -- bought it in the early '70s -- and used it successfully.

Worked great.

2 things, tho:

  • The bike tilts 'the wrong way' when cornering (no biggie).
  • You can't back-up (at least not much -- or, I couldn't).
I eventually sold it to a buddy who had a long-distance haul -- 250cc dual-sport behind a Ford Focus.
