Superstitious riding

I rode last friday, the 13th and I ran over a dead black cat, I was following to close behind the car in front  and still made it home! I must admit, I wont ride under a ladder, something seems a bit unlucky about trying to do that

Things like Roo's, Wallabies (like a roo) and bloody wombats! now these *******s can be about the size of a beer barrel on stumpy legs and have been known to rip diff's out
Crikies mate! I'm from Wisconsin, and I can't imagine hitting some bloodied up beer barrel thingie that rips my diff off!! :haha:

About the worst thing we have around here is this thing called a moose (our Canadian friends know all about these). Sorta like a deer, but about 10 times bigger and with antlers the size of a double decker bus. When it moves its head, you can feel the wind Down Under. Never heard of anyone cutting one of THOSE in half with the FJR. :D

All joking aside, I usually avoid night riding if possible, even though it's one of my favorite times to ride. A little less true if I'm in the city, where there's fewer animals.

Not really a superstition but I call it a day after nearly broadsiding moose or deer. Figure my luck was used up for the day and it's time for a beer or two.

Not so much out of superstition but I don't ride on Holidays. The state patrol always predicts the number that will be killed in the upcoming holiday weekend, damned if they aren't always right on. 15-20 deaths alone in GA for a holdiay weekend is too much for me.

Had one of my worst close calls on memorial day weekend in 03. My inlaws said they would watch our 1 yr old girl while we went for a ride, my wife was pregnant with our 2nd child but they trust me even though I (and probably they) thought it risky. I asked my wife where she would like to go since she only rides 2-3 days/yr with me. She said lets go to T.W.O. for lunch. I immediately thought "bad idea, don't do it". All the yahoo drunks and knuckleheads camping/drinking etc in the mtns. I had been riding those awesome roads M-F for the last couple yrs to work and back and avoided them like the plaque on weekends and especially holidays.

Anyway, we're off. We're headed up 129 past Turners corner winding nicely up to Blood mtn. I was going 60ish, likely a little too fast considering and on the GL1800. We go around a sharp corner approaching Desota Falls, 2lanes my side coming out of right hand corner, one lane other side. Halfway through the corner I spot a large van in a small paved pull out I never noticed before (because I'm usualy flying through that corner) I look down at his front wheels and see them start to roll! the dimwit is making a Uturn in a corner!! I lay on the GL1800 horn(truck horn) and look to the edge of the road on the other side where I can feel we're going to hit. No car is coming the other way so while I'm still blowing the horn, I open the throttle in an attempt to beat the van to the site of our impact-to-come. He's still rolling and I can sense the front of the van is going to hit us in the knees and I think "I just turned our little daughter into an orphan" adrenaline pumping everything else slows down, we advance a little more to the impact spot on the edge of the road and I sense the van will now hit the trunk of the GL1800 sending my wife and I flying over the edge of the road into the trees. If I stuck out my right hand I would have hit the front of the van! Just as the GL1800 hit the edge of the road, I leaned hard right back into the road and by the grace of god missed that halfwit in the van. I slowed down caught my breath and rode up to the top of Blood mtn and pulled over. I apologized to my wife and expected her to say "call me a cab" instead she says "if we were in the car we would have hit him?!" I said "yeah but, um never mind". She later told me she was looking at the driver the entire time and he had is window rolled down but never responded.

I don't go against my better judgement anymore and if I ride up there on weekends I go early 6-9 a.m. Saturday while everybody is sleeping off their hangovers, ride briskly, stop at t.w.o. for a break and get out!

Steve
