Not sure what they are called, but how do you remove the plastic fastners that need to be pushed out before they come off. The ones you can get behind and push out are OK, but some you cannot get behind and there is not way to remove them. They look like they have a phillip screw driver head, but they don't do anything when you turn them.

I am trying to install the hyper lights and want to do it rigt. Just not sure what "right" is. Can't even get the silly plastic "scress" out.

Thanks in advance.

If they are the same as on the '04...turn the center with a Phillips. The center should turn out. Then pull out fastener.

To install just push the center in once you have it aligned in the fairing.

With something like a small allen wrench push in the middle of the head (from the front) after you feel a slight pop, pull out. Be careful not to lose that pin in the middle.

These guys are right but there are two types in use on the FJR and one you push in on the middle pin and the other you turn with a phillips screwdriver and it pops out a bit and you pull it out the rest of the way.

They are called rivets. As others have said, you push the center in until it clicks, then get your fingernails around the entire head of the rivet and wiggle it out. To re-install the rivet you push the center back out so it sticks out the front of the rivet and clicks in place. Carefully push it back in place by pushing on the perimeter and then push the center until it clicks into place and sits flush with the top of the rivet.

Next time you call University Motors for parts, get a few spare rivets. There are two sizes of the center push-pin type and one size of the phillips head type.

One small thing: After you push the center of the pin in with a small Allen wrench, pull out on the main body by putting a fingernail under it. Do it slowly so that you don't loose the whole thing down in tthe bike somewhere where it will be lost forever. Note that there is one for each of the panels. Panel C's is near the end of the panel behind the the instruments. Panel D's is at front down low. Also, turning the wheel hard left, on an 07, makes for more room for your hand.

Have fun!!!!

You guys are incredible. I was not expecting so much help. After reading the thrashing some people take from members, I thought I would be abused for my lack of knowledge taking these off. Thanks.

The rivets I was trying to take off were on the left side plastic so I could get at the electrics. I can't seem to find a place to hook the hyper lights too. I tried taking off the tail section, but got stumped again by the little plastic rivets. The drove me nuts on the ST and now on the FJR.

By the way, any ideas on where a nice easy spot might be on the FJR to hook in the hyper lights?

Again, thanks for the help. This seems to be a great site for anything short of FJR bashing.

I had trouble with the Phillips rivet at the front center of panels B and C. The whole rivet was turning. The body of the rivet must be stationary when turning the Phillips pin in order for it to pop out correctly. Had to hold it with pliers.

Just take your knife blade to "pop" the phillips head up, then pull the whole clip.

And if you loose any of those plastic rivets.......you can probably find suitable replacements in the nuts/bolts section of your local Lowes Store.

That's funny you said that, because just today I was in Lowe's, looking at some other hardware, and saw some push-rivets and thought "those would prolly fit my bike where I'm missing some".

Things that make you go "Holy crap!"...

Funny you should mention that. I had a lot of trouble with several of them. But thanks to all of you, I now have Hyper Lights on both our FJRs. Had a little trouble with the hook up, but the friendly people at Hyper Light were fantastic and very friendly.

By the way, those little lights are really fantasic. Should have got them sooner.

Thanks again to everyone
