Tank Bags Magnetic vs Strap Mount

To avoid the problems of both the strap-on and magnetic bags, take a look at the Bags Connection tankbags at Twisted Throttle. I have the Vina, which is a rather small bag, but I can get a spare face shield, cellphone and a bunch of other misc. stuff in it. The mounting system is great and nothing touches the tank. I have also modified a 21 liter Marsee teardrop bag to mate to the quicklock ring for when I need a big bag on longer trips. Bags Connection also makes larger bags and in fact they show the Trial QL on a FJR. I think someone on the Forum has one and posted about it.

I have been using a strap mounted tank bag for the year that I've had my FJR. Before I mounted the the bag I put on one of these. Premier Cycle accessories I have had no problems with either scratches or the plastic film coming off.

Btw, I'm in no way affilitated with Premier Cycle, just a happy customer

I sent Twisted Throttle an email last night. I've already recieved a response as of 8:30 this morning. Pretty nice customer service.

Here are some details and a link. Looks pretty cool. Not lockable with a key like the Luggage Locker, but something could probably be arranged.

Anyway, here's the email with an explanation and a link to product with full pics down the side.

------------------------------

The SW-Motech system has a horse shoe shaped ring that bolts on top of

the gas cap filler plate with longer blots. The bags have a similar

shaped horse shoe ring that you mount to the underside of the bag. The

rings fit together by the tabs at the open end of the horse shoes

sliding into one another while a spring load pin at the top of the

horse

shoe ring secures the rings together. If you click on the following

link

and take a look at the pictures running down the right hand side you

can

get an idea for how the bags sit on the tank and secure to it.

https://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2131/441/

Because of the quick release, just pull the spring load pin back and

slide the bag of the ring, the bag comes off easily and with the horse

shoe shape of the tank ring the gas cap can still swing open

unrestricted for fueling.

Hopefully this answers your questions and if you have any more please

feel free to ask.

Regards,

Dereck

Further communications:

Andre,

I can sell the bottom ring to mount onto the tank, but I can not sell the top ring that mounts to the bag without a bag.

Regards,

Dereck

Looks like a decent product.

Silly Me!!!!! I thought this topic would help answer more questions for me than it would create…… {id est ignorance is bliss…syndrome}

It has brought a lot of great tips, ideas and considerations, but has also added a few LAYERS of additional factors, products, vendors, etc…. {id est – nothing is ever as simple as it seems}

A couple of the bags shown here make me think I would need a booster seat to see over them; and to think that when I first started looking into purchasing a tank bag I wasn’t sure how big would be big enough.

Thanks for everyone’s input. It has all been very helpful.

My wife has a magnetic tank bag from Roadgear. She takes it with her when we stop at restaurants. She keeps walking out of the restaurants with silverware hanging off of her bag. Be careful, the utensils can scratch the tank.

With my luck I would get busted for ripping off the restaurant.........

Great pics of a real installation. For my uses, I could buy the baseplate and the camera mount system, but I'd still never get the ability to lock the unit down with a key as I eventually might with the Luggage Locker arrangement.

HOWEVER, I'm still having trouble dealing with the owner of Luggage Locker. I placed my order for a simple baseplate on January 7. I have documentation of reciept. I got a phone call today after I left a message on his voicemail yesterday. I can replay the VM he left me and quote his words directly, but in effect:

"I have your order and I'm sorry, but I don't have a heated garage so I can't work the plastic."

"I have about a 6 week period where I can't get anything out."

"This is the off season and most people aren't ordering much."

"I've brought the materials here into the house and I'll get it done."

"Expect an email."

His actual message is about 2 full minutes long.

This is for a simple baseplate! I can't believe he doesn't keep anything in stock. Take a look at the page, click on the link about himself, look at the house pics with the Duc in the living room. I find myself asking why there's no heat and no inventory for a business.

Maybe I'm just being a grumpy old FJR owner. 28 days and several emails to find out it's too cold to work plastic.

Price difference? I bought the basic bag and camera mount used from a friend for $40 delivered..... yeah, cheap. Now the baseplate is gonna cost $54.90 delivered. This gives me the mount, tank bag, and camera mount system (similar to the unit you're showing but without damping) for $95. Standard retail for the baseplate and camera mount thru the unavailability department of Luggage Locker would be $124.90.

The SW-MOTECH / TwistedThrottle unit with a baseplate and just the camera mount system would cost $104.99. The differences are lockability vs availability. It'll be interesting to see how this is going to work out.

I ad one of these (the older model) on my Ninja for two years. Bought a new one for the FJR.

https://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/1859/86/

It has a ring that goes around the gascap, the bag snaps into place. Doesn't touch the tank at all, no scratches to worry about. And it's got a spring loaded locking pin that keeps it there. I dropped my Ninja twice (low speed parking maneuvering) and it didn't come close to popping off.

I use the smaller one but eventually will get a bigger one when i get a chance to do multi-day/multi-state rides.

they make a a camera mount that uses the gascap mounting ring too but it's a bit expensive.

I just cancelled my order with Luggage Locker. I went dowstairs, took the existing baseplate I got with the bag, and pulled the entire lock assembly out of the baseplate with my bare hand. Seems it's just sorta glued in place. No threads, no pins, no retainer except 'modern chemistry'.

Hardly secure. Hardly a locker. Gonna go with the Twisted Throttle product. Baseplate and camera mount. I'll figure out how to lock it.

I can't recommend the Luggage Locker product or company at all.

Been using magnetic bags for umm 11 or 12 years on multiple bikes never scratched a tank period ... if you scratch your tank then you have sand or something between the bag and the tank period... neoprene on the ones i buy don't scratch paint.. Have 3500 miles on my 07 FJR now and it has had a new cortech magnetic on it every since i bought it with no effect...

Thanks for the update!!!

Unfortunate about the quality of their products.

I now have a strap-on 21 liter Cortech for a long ride. (I currently use a small Nelson-Rigg magnetic for day trips.) I'm concerned about scratches (never had one on a magnetic). What about some painters tape at the wear points when on a long-term ride with the strap on bag? And any tips on how to handle fill-ups with a big tank bag? Also mentoned was lateral movemnet in winds with a strap-on bag. Anybody else find this an issue? TIA

Andre-

I think you will be happy with the Twisted Throttle (Bags Connection) product. The quick/easy on & off is a real benefit. I'm not sure trying to lock a fabric tank bag is much of an issue. Anyone with a knife can get to it. My bag is small enough (the Vina) that I just put it into a side bag if I'm going to be away from the bike for a while. Enjoy!

You and I are on the same page as far as security is concerned. That's why the whole mount is going under a small, lockable hard case. The Twisted Throttle/SW-Motech stuff should be here tomorrow. I should have pics on the site by Sunday.

Sometimes you just have to comply with certain state and federal laws........
