Cav - if ya wanna do valves, yer gonna need to get there Friday so your bike can sit overnight. AllenC is going to do a valve check on his bike, so if'n you wanna tackle that, you won't be the only one, and the guys that actually know what they're doing will be there to assist.

Everything else sounds very do-able and, no, you don't need to take the tank off for plugs and a TBS. You'll just need to lift it which is no big deal. Do yourself a favor, though, and get there with around 1/4 tank of gas.

I seriously do not know enough to do a valve check. It would be basically someone else doing it for me while I hand them tools or hold their drink.LOL

Someone would have to volunteer to hold my hand 99% of the way.

I am planning on getting to town on Friday night. It looks like it is 6 hours at the most. I am intending to leave around 3 central time. I guess I forgot about you being on eastern time. I will cross that bridge when I get there if needed.

This might be the list I try to tackle

Brake Pads and Fluid
Clutch Fluid
Steering head Bearing Tighten
Throttle body sync
Spark Plugs
Pivot Point Lube
Coolant Flush
Cruise Control Trouble Shoot
Aux Brake lights Trouble Shoot
Replace broken tail piece.

The materials list for that stuff is readily available.
I have no immediate idea what a valve check entails. ........I need to do a search

I have an intermittent cruise issue going on with the audiovox unit. I think it is one of two things....either water got into the unit itself or a brake wire is kicking it off
The LEDs on the back of my bike have been flickering, so I think it is a loose wire somewhere.
Yay! Electrical issues. My life has meaning and purpose again! That is if you want my help. I'll have my electrical box with me. Soldering iron, heatshrink, multimeter, etc. I've got to look and see what I have for wire.

I'm of no use otherwise.

I would offer to ride with you for the home stretch, but sounds like you'll be getting in a couple hours later than me. I'm planning on leaving here around 4 PM. Should be to the sheep ranch by 6:30.

There is actually going to be a tutorial for AllenC to be coached through his own valve check... Cav47 can do same, and you'll end up doing your own which is a good way to learn. Best the two of you park side by side in the shop. Tim is the electrical guru and Bust is the master of smoke, and both of them say you can't get smoke back in.

Joe is coming and he will be escorted to the library by BikerGeek to see if there's anything interesting on the bookcase to read and he might just bump into something. Meanwhile, I will have a clipboard and will be taking names for the test rides......... first come first serve.

Beer MONEY is no good to us, beer is. Billy Fitz and Geek will provide lessons.

--Emphatic--"$hit!!!" Now I have to figure out what to buy for a valve check and if it needs adjusted!!!

I know there is an article out there, but I will likely misinterpret something and mess it up. So someone tell me exactly what to buy/bring.

As for beer money, I have an ID and know how to use it!! Lol.

I also want to make sure others get their stuff done. I am more than happy to make sure Allen gets the undivided attention to getting his done first.

Thanks in advance.

Valve check requires coolant change and two O-rings for the water pipe. Gen1 requires one more larger O-ring for thermostat housing. I believe we have gaskets if we can't salvage the originals. Shim kit and Carbtune will be in the tool kit. We should do the valve checks simultaneously.

OK for DRZ forks on Friday, but Saturday, I'm just manning the clipboard........... well, I might have a beverage too.

I would love the help. Not sure what we will be able to accomplish besides the valve check but electric trouble shooting can be horrendous even for the skilled.

I know enough to know that I don't know enough. I live by those words, so please educate me!!

As for the ride in, it will be later than you. Going to have to figure out how to get to the place I am staying for the night if the bike is cooling off.

I'll just be there to drink beer & rye whiskey, sometimes at the same time. It's called a boilermaker.

If you're staying at the Pines, coordinate with AllenC. Our host will assist with carting us between the sheep pen and the hotel(s). I will PM you the address for the sheep pen.

Speaking of our host, I spoke with him last night. They had to put Dukie down yesterday, so the place isn't gonna have a blind dog walking in to things.

But let's do a quick roll call - who's going?

* Geek and Sooze

* Ray

* 'Fitter

* DesignFlaw

* Naskie

* Joe (the el toro one)

* Pista

* AllenC and guest

* Cav

* TommyKay

* extrememarine

* FJRfarrier

* oface

* BlacknWhite23

* bseelbach

* deagle

* BugR (maybe?)

* zed88 (maybe?)

Did I miss anyone?

And if anyone needs the address, let me know!

Edited above with tasks...... coolant to be procured locally on Saturday and any other needed supplies.

If Wheatie's son comes, that will be 4 valve checks...... each coolant change is a bit over 2 litres....

There will be a few emergency spare parts in case somebody forgets breaks something.

I would love the help. Not sure what we will be able to accomplish besides the valve check but electric trouble shooting can be horrendous even for the skilled.
We can't make it worse right? We might turn it in to not being salvageable, but not working is still not working. I'm thinking running new wire may just save time and energy. Soldered connections, get rid of that crimped stuff. Or at a minimum, reinforce the crimp connections with some solder.

We have at least 3 valve checks, do we have 3 spare gaskets? I thought Ray said he only had 2. I think I'd rather have a new gasket put on anyway. Since it is apart, why not?

I sent out some PMs about the parts list for a Gen 1. I did look them up, but since some parts are gonna be there, I was not sure what to pick up.

The idea is to re-use the right side cover gaskets, but if we rip one, we replace it. You will not go wrong if you bring one. RTV in an emergency.

There is a set of spares if any get lost/broken. I believe Wayne has spare valve cover gasket.

O-rings - (2) 93210-18417-00 for all Gens.

O-ring - (1) 93210-23787-00 additionally for Gen 1

Gasket, right engine - 5JW-15456-11-00

CCT - IMC-12210-00-00 (previous was 5JW-12210-10-00)

Gasket - 5JW-12213-00-00

Just got confirmation that my CCT is the original. As many of you have said, I am on borrows time with that. Going to get one ordered tonight. I know that is something I have to do ASAP.

I am open to all advice on prioritizing this growing list of stuff.

Would all of you agree that doing the CCT is #1 on the list?
