I caught wind of the Hanford site story.... wow. It explains a lot ;)
Oh, that nugget. Well, notwithstanding a weird pride that locals have of their mushroom cloud mascotted high school football team and that 7th grade standard science includes studying the half life decay and particle products of Pu239 into a stable element--the lack of trees is because of the giant rain shadow cast by the Cascades.

I live in McMinnville, 20 minutes further out from Newberg, which I drive through twice a day. Figure on a minimum 45 minute drive to Portland, almost none of it freeway, and that's if you can avoid rush hour. IMO, McMinnville is a much nicer town, bigger than Newberg, with a lot of shopping and atmosphere. I've been commuting to Portland over 10 years, and yes it really sucks.

Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.
I'm glad to hear this. When looking at jobs in the area, I found the housing market to be a bit better in McMinnville and it looks as though the drive between the two towns would be insignificant.

I'm so pleased with everyone's feedback to this point. I'm looking at probably 3 more months until licensure and accreditation bodies give me the full go ahead, so I do have a little bit of time. When looking at hospital positions, I also have to consider another 3-4 months after licensure to process through the credentialing madness. Again, I greatly appreciate the local feedback.

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about Newberg OR.

However for what it is worth, I spent a week in Boise ID last spring attending a conference. I can not tell you how impressed I was with the City of Boise, and the surrounding area. A few high points to consider:

-Very clean

-Low crime rate

-College town

-Appeared to have a strong economy

-Folks were friendly

-Mild temps with lots of sunshine

-Mountians close by

-Tons of great MC roads

If I wasn't so entrenched where I am at, I would move there in a heartbeat. Only downside is lots of people from California figured out what a great place Idaho is, and are moving there in droves... Definitely worth a look.

Best of luck!
