Ok I felt like I needed to say this for sometime now and after I could not sleep Sat. about 3am it has not left my mind.

I joined this forum at first only to answer some questions about the FJR that I had before I bought one, while I found what I was looking for I also found something much more.

I found out what a great community of people are in this sometimes crazy place called the FJRforum. That has never been more apparent than the last couple of days.

I have not met a single member in person as of yet but I hope that will change in the future. I read this forum almost every single day and have learned plenty thanks to the information put here buy the members.

Even though some members will never meet each other, I see that most will still become friends through the forum. I feel like I know so many of you already. I'm not sure that I fit the profile of alot of the members here, but I sure am jealous. I read of all the great group rides and gatherings that occur and wish I could be part of that fun, Unfortunately my job situation bites and the only good thing about it is being able to ride my FJR to work and back. One of these days maybe things will get better and I will be able to get more involved, Until then I will keep reading and hope to learn everything I can. I will try to add what I can to this forum even if some of it is just giving a warm welcome to new members. Some may say that is not much, but I think that is very important and helps keep the forum what it is, A BIG FAMILY!

Ok enough of my ramblings,

Thank You,

I know what you mean. I came for some information, and stayed for the friends I have made. Strange, I know.

Perhaps you can arrange your work schedule so that you can attend EOM. There will be a tad more than a few of us there. It will definitely be worth your while to attend. There's good people hanging around in here.

Jim,

We're gonna get together for a ride and soon. The fall is before us and we'll enjoy the cool temperatures and our lovely GA mtn. roads.

Try to take some time for EOM and you'll have a chance to make a 100+ new friends and ride in curvy WVA to boot.

In October, we're gonna have a GA FJR rally at TWO. I know you'll work that into your schedule.

I agree with you. All of us who participate in this forum take away much more than we put into it. It is truly an adjunct to the FJR riding experience that we all enjoy so much.

I'm looking forward to a ride soon. Let's post up for a day ride when the weather breaks. It looks like we have 5 days of welcomed rain in the forecast for now.

Best Regards,

Good post.

I have been here since the EZ board days and I guess I am sticking around as long as they will have me.

Lots of good, quality people here.

Dittos, same here, +1, Gunny: whatever conveys it best. I always rode alone or with one or two friends who I happened to know who rode till I found this forum. Guy who sold me the bike told me about it in fact. I'm lucky enough to be in a very "active" forum area; there are at least two or three dozen active members around here--meaning they post a lot and join in on lots of group rides, etc. Took my first group ride last fall and found the guys (and wives too, in this particular group) to be very friendly and accepting, as well as helpful with advice and even things like letting me switch out my windscreen for a test ride and so on. So I've ridden with them, learned a hell of a lot of "new to me" roads in my area I'd never seen in over 40 years living in this area, and made some damn good friends. Topped it all off with a trip to NAFO and met a lot of folks from all over that I've exchanged opinions and laughs, and sometimes butted heads with here on the forum, and they're all damn good folks.

I can't pass a stopped FJR if I see one and the rider's around. Most of them at least know the forum and if they don't I sure tell them about it. Seems like they're missing out if they don't come in and pick up some good pointers or make some friends. So Jim, do what the folks are telling you. Get in on some rides, go to EOM, have a good time. You'll enjoy your FJR even more.

I don't see myself buying a FJR for a while... but there's some sound riding advice from a lot of experienced riders here and it is a big confidence boost knowing that I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks FJR Forum and the people that make it great :)

What he said

Jim - you said beautifully what I've been thinking all weekend. I'm very new to this Forum but quickly learned who comprise its heart and soul. Tim 'TWN' Bates was definitely one of those grand (not so) old patriarchs. I was stunned to learn of his sudden death first thing Saturday morning. My deepest sympathies go to both Tim's family and to his chosen Forum family.

Nice post, Jim. Thank YOU for adding to this "great community of people". Crazy? Yes. Dysfunctional? Sometimes. But even then, we really know how to put the FUN in dysFUNctional :friends:

Looking forward to a get together at T.W.O. , EOM would be great but don't see it in the cards this year.

Great post Jim and I'm with you as well.

Try as I might, I can't possibly give back what this forum has given me. (Doesn't stop me from trying though ;) )

I agree! :exhappysmiley:

After all, every family has at least one dysfunctional member. We won't talk about who it is in this family. Right? :friends: :friends:

I'm not a real social guy...but I do love my FJR and riding it. I bought my FJR before I googled FJR and found the EZBoard community which ended up here at the Forum.

I can only say that I have met friends on this board that I would and do travel hundreds/thousands of miles to see. I am not mechanically inclined but have been helped greatly by local riders who have given of their time and knowledge to help me learn something new maintenance-wise on this great sport touring bike.

I have taken trips with Forum members who were strangers before the trip but buddies afterwards. I came for the info and have stayed for the shared memories and friendships.

Things get goofy around here...but with all the gray adolescents around here...its gonna be that way sometimes. But when people need help or somebody is ahurtin'...the true caring and helpful nature of many stands out.

This FJRForum is not just an ethereal internet cafe. It is a real place where real people ride, share and care.

Unfortunately, real people get hurt and real people pass on. That is why with the good...the hurt comes as well sometimes.

I'm glad the Old Michael is gonna recover and get better...that is fantastic news after such grave circumstances...

...but it is incredibly...incredibly sad that we lost Tim/TWN and won't be able to travel with him anymore. We lost Tim FAR too soon. :(

This place gets under your skin and in your blood. I guess that is what makes us all feel like blood-brothers... (...and sisters for a few of our sweeter members).

If you think you're hooked on the friends through the forum, try attending an event. You'll never want to lose touch with the people you meet.

So... "You're Welcome" and a return "Thank you" since it is members like you that make us what we are.

Very well said, Jim. This place is amazing. Simply amazing. And what Duff said couldn't be more true. Once you actually meet these folks in person you'll feel like you've known them for years. Come to think of it, some of the folks that I've met 'round here I actually have known for years now. Time goes by so quickly.

This place kicks all kinds of ***.

Online, I play chess and read this forum. I have dialup and that is all the time I can afford online. It really is a toss up which is more fun - playing chess with people around the world or reading this forum. FYI, you can't cuss on the chess site.

I constantly learn something on this forum whether it a farkle tip or a reminder of safety. And I am always impressed with YOU guys and gals ability to solve just about any problem from separation to divorce to ignition failures. I was amazed at the posts after the policeman posted under the influence and in the end the problem was solved. It started out badly, but in the end, the problem was solved.

Without question, I look forward to meeting all of you. I am shocked at the recent loss of TWN, and I was devastated when I read the post about the loss of Jordan by his dad.

On a lighter side, I rode with a buddy this weekend trying to get in shape for the EOM. He has a Honda Shadow 1100cc or maybe 1200cc. I can only recognize motorcycles that have their name written on them. I know what an R1 is if it says R1 on it. The same with an R6, or the V-Strom or the CBR or the GSXR. If it doesn't have it's name on it, it is a sport bike or a cruiser to me. I am getting better. I can spot a Busa without the Japanese writing on the fairing if it has the lump on the back seat. I can spot some Harleys with the funny looking front fairing that appears to cover the hands (not sure what it is called though).

So we stop at a Yamaha / Suzuki motorcycle shop so my buddie can get an oil filter for his Honda. They don't have Honda parts and they tell us where the Honda place is. We look at some bikes with their names on them, but they didn't have an FJR. We head out of there and I walk past a really nice looking blue bike. Really nice. We were in a hurry and we didn't stop, but the guy spotted my really nice silver bike and headed over to chat. He really liked the back rest and luggage rack made by Gerauld. I told him about the FJR Forum and how to locate Gerauld. He thanked me. I told him he had a nice looking bike - what kind? FJR. Duh. I guess I didn't see FJR written on it. I suck.

So we buzz to the Honda place. We park the bikes and go in for an oil filter. They are closing. We get the filter and look around for the ST or perhaps the VFR. Then I spot a really nice looking blue bike on the floor. Really nice. I thought it was an older ST. Nope, it was an FJR. We did get to see a new VFR as they were installing the saddle bags. I liked it.

So we continue on our trip with his new oil filter and head to WV. We try to get the best gas mileage that we can. We love the twisties, but the goal is to get good gas mileage. I go by the computer and he does it the old fashioned way. In addition, points can be deducted if you drop below the max safe speed for a curve. Or, of course doing something that makes you look like a putz.

So we are riding west on Rt 50 from Winchester VA and crossing the mountains and he is leading. The Shadow is a pig (compared to the FJR) and he gets us passed by a pickup truck riding up the mountain. That is a -2 by all international judging rules.

He finishes the day with 50.0 mpg minus 2 for a score of 48. I finish with a score of 51.1 mpg with no deductions. That was in the 225 mile trip category. Not a world record nor even my personal best, but hopefully that qualifies me for the EOM finals. I plan to bring my A game to EOM.

In addition, I plan on assuming that every bike will be an FJR so I won't be suprised that the really nice looking blue bike or burgundy bike or silver bike or black bike is actually an FJR also. I am really looking forward to the EOM and meeting everyone.
