Pull the head yourself, you're looking at about $1200.

That's what I was wonderin', if Maddog's price included teardown of the entire bike. If not, as you suggest, I box up my head, send it to a reputable cylinder head remanufacturer, and get it back ready to re-install, crank and drive. Assuming no piston damage.
Here's a deal Howie...I'll trailer mine to your palace in Florida...I'll pay for your head work if you do the same to mine...side by side...OK ???

I'm lookin'....REAL HARD....to find a "plus" in this suggestion. :)
I pay for ya head being fixed...you take mine apart and put it back together in parallel; after you do yours and learn what to do...mine'll take half as long as yours, I'm sure

what's so hard ???

Okay, so I'm letting "work" distract me. (If my boss knew how much time I spent here during the day........ )

Okay, I'm likin' your plan. Lemme amend it.....

Let's meet up at Walt's place, use his garage, tools, sleeping arrangements and kitchen and get to work!!

He's about halfway between us. Plus, I can go visit Granny in Chipley, an hour away.

Thoughts??? :)

Y'know, I just did a Mapquest thingy and Walt IS halfway between us, just about 20 miles shorter for you than me. :yahoo:

If Walt will put us up for a night or two and Jan will help us out on the work...I'm in :yahoo:

I spent the day at the Walter Fooshee garage shop as he installed my AVCC (Audiovox Cruise Control)

and I could find him a used starter ta boot

you have a bike trailer and something to pull it 250 miles ???

do you or anyone remember the post/thread on looking into a company providing a manual cam tensioner ???

<amnesia set in again>

and here's Jan:

Fred - I'm just repeating what the mechanic told me. I don't know how one "burns" a valve.
IIRC, valves wick heat back to the head when they're closed. If the valve isn't seating properly, it can actually start to melt.

Wow, for that kind of dough, you should just get another '04 and use your current one as a parts bike.
Or (since we're talkin' money), even changing brands can be considered:

From H-D: "About two weeks after an engine is shipped to H-D it is returned to the dealer. It is installed with it's original VIN and a one year warranty. When you need a Harley engine rebuild, the one year warranty is a big plus over other choices. Depending on your engine, prices start at $2,000."

jes sayin' :)

I don't know. A HD motor in a Feej chassis would be kinda nasty. And not in a good way. And their one year warranty assumes accumulated mileage of about 500-700.

True, but at HD speeds, that's a good year, year and a half of riding! :lol2:

Damn, I sure hope my luck holds as I approach 45k miles. I had a mechanic once tell me that Yamaha engines were good for ~75k until they started to go to hell iin a hand basket. I know there are a lot of folks on here well over 75k and even 100k so I hope his opinion was wrong and that this recent rash of CCT failures is an exception.

Best of luck with your next bike!
