Background:

Last week on my way to work I saw a very large URP (Unidentified Road Pizza) in the opposite lane. I believe a few minutes earlier was a ~20-25 lb beaver. On the drive by it looked to be only a few minutes old, with a piece of a front air dam and a hubcap in the area. What was notable was a flock of 6-9 turkeys standing right there on the shoulder, all with their necks stretched out looking at the URP. You could just hear the a unanimous OH **** coming from the group. The ones in the back were saying, 'I'm not crossing that road, you go first'.

Today:

Approaching that same area I saw motion coming from the woods heading for the road. Out comes a white tail deer, probably not a year old. It was running as fast as it could with its tail straight up and the ears flopping wildly. Where there is one there is usually more so my eyes went right to the woods. Sure enough there was something coming out of the woods heading for the road. About the time the deer was arriving at the double yellow the other animal was emerging onto the shoulder. At first I thought the deer was the darkest one I had ever seen. Then it seemed to be awfully short. In what probably took less than a second my brain caught up with what my eyes were seeing and I realized the second animal was a turkey running for all it was worth, flapping its wings forward at the deer with its neck fully extended. Even over the wind and motorcycle I could hear a steady stream of GOBBLE-GOBBLE-GOBBLE......as they streaked across the road into the woods on the other side. As I passed by I could see the panicked deer running for its life with the turkey in hot pursuit while furiously flapping its wings at the deer.

What's up with that?

A few minutes later when I mentally replayed the scene I realized

 That was funny!

lmao lol

Now I wonder if the flock hadn't run the URP out into oncoming traffic. I've seen these turkeys in this area for most of the spring and summer but recently they seem to have taken on an atti-TUDE. One thing is for sure, I will cautiously ride through this area for a while.

So do any of you Marlin Perkins/Marty Stouffer types have an explanation for this?

Nesting season? It's not uncommon for birds to vigorously defend their nests when eggs are present. Often one of a pair sits, the other defends or attempts to lead predators away from the nest.

I'm sure it has to be territorial or nesting related. It would have to be a second brood for the turks this year, they have already raised at least 28 chicks as best we could count.

In any case, that poor deer is gonna need counseling and may be scarred for life.

Turkeys - direct descendants of the Velociraptor!

My guess would be that some other critter chased both the deer and the turkey into the road. You have coyotes or coy-dogs around there?

Alan - the mental picture of that is funny as hell!

Johnny - whattaya live in a damn cave or sumthin'??

Funny stuff Ion!

Almost as funny (I hope he forgives me) was riding with Gregory and his brother and nephew Monday on back roads. Gregory saw a wild turkey by the road (common) which I didn't think much about. Further on I pointed out an Osprey nest on top of a pole on the ride. When we stopped for a moment, I asked if he saw the Osprey -- he thought I was talking about the turkey. I saw his brother grin explaining it to Gregory. Funniest looking Osprey I ever did see....

Donno if the deer pissed them off, but turkeys can be mean bastards. Not as mean as Emus, but that's a whole different thread.
