And most importantly, all that stuff that was put off because it didn't seem important actually made a difference in performance and handling (and probably safety). Great example of why doing recommended service at the recommended intervals is important. Excellent! Party on.

OMG...I agree with Bounce. Now I'm gonna hafta go wash my brain out with soap.

Sooo, it seems like NOT doing the service has a higher cost after all? It also sounds like you "got a new bike" for only $1700. That is actually a pretty good deal.

My father always said... "You can pay now, or you can pay later... But you always pay"

Was that Stadium Yamaha in Irving? If Dean Phelps is still there and the one that did the work, you got your moneys worth. He is a very good mechanic. Sometimes a little moody, but great wrench.

I would have expected new PR3 tires included at that price. I had the same stuff done here last fall for about half the price.

I was told that they did indeed adjust valves. Almost all of them needed to have the shims replaced/adjusted.
This makes me a bit nervous. Did they supply you with all of the before and after measurements? If not, can you go back to them and get them? These would be good to know to determine the overall health of your bike.

For instance if the clearances of the exhaust valves are growing it would be a sign of increased carbon deposits on the valve faces. The "normal" thing to see is a slow decrease in the clearances over time as the valve seat and face wear.

He had a check at 40k, no shims changed (mine OK but getting snugger than I want). Not unusual at 73k he needed several shims changed (on a few I have done at that mileage, that has been the case). I know mine is going to need shim changes this go-round..... sounding kinda normal to me (and normal that it has been a slow decrease over time). Dealer tech will be likely going by the book.....

Yes he had a prior check (or at least paid for one). We have no idea what the clearances were then. How do we know it was a slow decrease over time since then? We don't even know if it was a decrease or an increase that they re-shimmed for.

Now suddenly "most" of the 16 valves need new shims? No that is not normal. Unless maybe they figured to just put all the valves at the center of spec since they were "going in there", which is quite possible. But if that were my bike I would want to know if that is what they did.

The techie in us makes us want to know the details, I don't think anybody supplies that unless specifically asked and most wouldn't (as they're not techies)....... and if it were my bike, I'd be shimming 70-80% of the biggest spec.... The gaps tend to get smaller over time, not larger. As for most of the 16 valves needing shims, that could mean 9 up to 15. Believable. And depends on so many factors including what were they right from the start......

Thanks for info! How do I add myself?

Reaction57,

Do a Google search for:

"FJR Owners Map"

with the quotes. Register as a new member there, if you are not on that forum already. Then post your ZIP code only (nothing more), to that thread.

Cheers,

Infrared
