For some reason I woke up at 5am this morning, up at 6. Go figger.

After breakfast and before everybody else got up I found myself outside and kanoodling the rear caliper, which according the P.O. had seized over the winter. Yanked out the pads (brand new EBC's) grabbed a C-Clamp and a piece of flat stock and gave pistons a little persuasion. Uhm, I don't think the caliper was seized. I thing it was the master cylinder (common on Honda's and Suzuki's). regardless, everything was freed back up and bolted back together.

Before I take it out, I thought it'd be good idea to, at the very least, check the brake fluid.

I don't think brake fluid is milky normally. Gonna have to change that ASAP.

Fired the bike up only to have it stall. Fired it back up immediate stall. Herm.. Diddle the choke. Fires up, stalls immediately. Weird. Repeat it all at least 10 more times.

Realize the bike is from 84 and has a fuel petcock. DOH!

Took it out around the block with no plates. I haven't seen a cop in my neighbourhood in months. I take my bike out with no plates, I see not one, but two! Managed to keep them both in front of me No tickets, no warnings.

Bike runs beautifully. Sounds awesome. Clutch needs adjustment as it engages at the very end of the lever travel. It's also a little uncoordinated at slow speeds. It figures itself out as soon as your rolling though. Brakes require a VERY firm hand/foot. See milky fluid comment.

Well my FJR is over at Jim's house safe and sound while my garage is in shambles getting a new foundation put under it. But that doesn't mean I can't get some work done on the CX.

So I went out and bled the brakes.

I don't know what the feck was in the rear reservoir, but I took the worst of it out with clean face cloth. What remained could only be described as chocolate milk. So after much bleeding, that is finally running clear.

On to the front.

Somebody must've done some work on them because the fluid is in good shape. Bleeding didn't make any difference at all.

The front brakes on this thing require a VERY firm hand. If you squeezed the FJR that hard, you'd either engage the ABS, or, give a demonstration on obtuse angles via the worlds biggest stoppie.

Hoses aren't brittle and appear to be in good shape with no cracking.

I've got a short list of stuff that needs replacing, most of which is bodywork or cosmetic. Mechanically, the bike seems to be in great shape (still have to meter the stator Alan, I'll get to that next).

I think I might even get to paint this year (white! like my first one!)

Here's a sample in white. What say you? White or Black?

BTW, turns out this one is owned by LeSkid, a passed forum member who I met camping at Mauricie around 2009 or so. Small world!

It's the connector on the stator wires that's the issue, the stator itself seems to be bullet proof. The connector that Honda was intent on using on most Honda models during the 80's always turned into a blob of dark brown melted plastic with copper wires that were burned to a dull cherry color that couldn't be soldered or crimped onto new pins.

Now, Goldwings, there is the actual stator problem. There was a range of years that fried the stator PDQ and it required pulling the engine from the frame to replace it.

Stick with the stock paint, IMO. If you insist on white, paint the rims period correct gold. Make 'em think it's a turbo.

That motor (primarily in the CX500 flavor) is notorious for water pump leaks (shaft bushing IIRC). AFAIK, there is no fix. Hopefully yours is in good shape.

Can you verify that the front brake lever and master cylinder are correct? A substitute (aftermarket or OEM from another bike) could greatly affect your braking effort.

She's a nice example of a good motorcycle, and a great idea for a putting around stablemate. I still regret selling my Red White and Blue 700s Nighthawk, but even if I still had it, I would never have it in place of any modern motorcycle. I still hang around with a bunch of my Nighthawk buddies that insist nothing built today can ever exceed the old UJM. Of course we all know that is Mule Fritters, but none the less I try to be supportive.

I still like the white. Even if it is a little Miami VIce 'ish. It really pops on the bike in person.

Ya, with anything 30+ years old, the problem areas are well known. In this case, stators, water pumps, cam chain tensioners (sound familiar?).

I'll have to ask on the CX forums about the effort required on the front brake. Maybe it's the brake pads. I now theirs a set of EBC Metallics on the back. If they same is on the front, that'd explain it. I'll pop off one of the calipers and have a look tonight.

Leave it black. Like sunglasses, white is for chicks and douche bags.
Well I'll have you know, I .... uh.. wait.. did you just call me a *********?

Well I'll have you know, I'm a Sweater Wearing Mexican *********!

Haha...White legs are ok. You're born with what you're born with. White motorcycles and white framed sunglasses are a different story.

Oh, and don't wear that sweater too long. You won't get any sun!!

Hppants, I got a RWB 86 Nighhawk with 17k ready for you to take possession when your wallet has recovered from the new FJR acqusition.

Was checking out the new FZ09 for a possible new stable mate..... 💀

Black. If you painted it white you'd also have to change the decals & pinstriping
Either way I'll have to redo the gfx. I can get some really good quality repo's for either color scheme.

It seems to be overwhelming black, but I'm still leaning toward the white.

Steve, that's a handsome bike. Congrats on acquiring it, and "going back again".
You're becoming quite the bike whore, huh?

(I vote black.)
Does 3 make me a bike whore? Their ARE 7 days in a week you know.

Wait....what does that make me then???

I love the bike, I love the white, but I would keep it black just because.

As for me, my bike of that same interest would be an old CB100 that I had when I was a kid, I want one again.

Lubed the clutch cable and caliper, lubed front brake caliper, lubed the throttle cables. Everything is in pretty good shape.

I'm gonna change the fork oil tonight. Likely it's never been done. Nice thing, back in the day, forks actually have drain screws on them! Great fun shooting a strand of oil all the way across the garage.
