Are your comments regarding scariness slip on cornering - front tire issues or back tire issues?

I am heading into Ohio this upcoming wet weekend with an extremejarhead and a milkshake slurper...and am looking for cautions on the front tire slip...which would scare the bejesus out of me...if not take me out.

In the wet both the front and rear have slipped. Any paint causes me full pucker moments with both ends, wet or dry. I get a lot of ABS action on both ends -- kind of a backhanded good thing because it keeps the solenoids working.

I still feel that I have an abnormal set of tires, everyone else says that these tires are great to near perfect. I think you should go with the mainstream positive reviews and ignore my outlier experience.

I expect my next set of tires won't be BR-023's.

Mark,

I also recently finished off my first set of the -023GT's.

I too felt less than warm and fuzzy about the rear tire's wet weather traction, though I had no complaint about the dry weather traction, not dirt road manners. My rear BT-023GT lasted me 7950 miles to the wear bars (center still fine) but much of that was lightly (1-up) loaded cool weather riding. I prefer to maintain tread grooves on my tires, so I swapped it at the wear bars though I could have squeaked another 1k out of the tire, maybe more if I rode on the highway a lot. When that rear tire was replaced a new PR2 went back on in it's stead.

OTOH, I do like the BT-023GT front tires. I have never sensed any slippage under any conditions with pressures set at the FJR nominal 40 psi up front, riding in all conditions and temps from below freezing to roast your nuts hot. The first one which went 11,236 miles, and was replaced a bit early because we were going up to CFR last week. I replaced that tire with a fresh one of the same because I prefer the feel of the -023GT to the PR2 front tires.

The only thing the BT-023GT front tire did do "wrong" is it did develop a little scalloping wear in the tread. This had no serious detrimental effect except a light buzzing heard and felt through the bars when cornering. I never sensed that the grip was compromised by that wear pattern.

Again it was replaced not even to the wear bars, so others may get even more miles. But it did mean that the tread wear was slightly uneevn and the tire was near tread-less in some areas with lots of tread left in others.

I should add that the new BT-023GT front I put on for CFR performed superbly over the 1800 miles we logged in Canada and the mountains of the northeast.

I think you will be fine chasing Wayne around in Ohio, especially 1-up. If it rains, just be aware that the rear end may do something silly like allow your rear wheel to actually lockup (I see that you do have ABS) on wet roads or street markings before the ABS kicks in. Give them a go and let us know what you think.

-023 front, PR2 rear. Works goodly for me.

Thanks for giving me the skinny on the tires, poor hijack and all.

...and now back to the glowing Yanks terrorizing Ontario and parts unknown...

If WheatonFJR, FredW & Ionbeam can now talk about the best oil to use we can get this moved to NEPRT.

yabbut... Can or can't one hijack one's own thread? (I know, this is Jack Handy deep)

I think there are thread hi-jacks and there is minor thread drift. I'd classify our minor foray into tahr experiences as the latter.

When and if the former happens, the current moderator pattern is to split the OT discussion off into a NEPRT thread.

So if you want to talk about oil, world travels, or other topics not previously introduced it very well may get calved into a splinter thread elsewhere.

Besides I already relinquished control of this thread publicly when I finished the RR. ;)

What if you want to talk about using different windshields combined with different tires to travel the world to find the perfect oil (or battery)?

Yeah, we got some food porn, alright.

It'll prolly be this weekend, but I'll get a RR up...

And good stuff, Fred. Our crossing back into the States was pretty easy compared to yours.

There will be some white flesh and some pink flesh and it will mostly be moist and raw, but it will be wrapped in rice and seaweed, so it's all good...

Given the current state of psychoanalysis and the current state of our forum rules one can only hi-jack one's own thread if one suffers from multi-personality disorder. Only then is one allowed to report on all the voices in their head.

Therefore in analyzing FredW's report we find a report on the scenery of Ontario Cottage Country and then a little voice in Fred's head pops up and starts thinking that maybe his tires are not satisfactory. The introduction of a tire thread into the middle of a Ride Report is jarring to the normal reader but those of us who are familiar with Fred's thought patterns are willing to make allowances.

In the case of WheatonFJR who in the EOM thread first mentions Kali and New Zealand roads and then admonishes me when I expand upon those thoughts. Well, that just the thought patterns of an idjit.

Wait a second. Are you saying that Professor ionbeam is just a little voice in my head? Just one of my many splintered personalities?

Because it was he who interjected tire concerns into this thread in post #34 which was taken and run with by the fellow from Wheaton as I recall. My tires were fine and dandy all throughout the rally.

But I gotta tell you Billy, you are all wet (still) as we have undeniable photographic evidence that Prof 'beam and I are two separate and unique carbon life forms. Why, just look at your own CFR group picture for example.

I think those meds they gave you for your leg must be better than you are letting on...

I only got Vicodin for my issue and no lil voices. Bill must of got the Canadian hi-power (morphine?) schtuff. Saw-weeet!! So I guess my tires are OK. Back to you professors....

Whew, I'm glad to have that cleared up! I already have too many voices in my head without hosting another one. I definitely don't want to go through life like Kuato. I suspect that Fred is actually a carbon/alcohol life form.

I have noticed that Bill's posts have been a bit skewed recently

The first rule of Fred's splintered personalities is that you don't talk about Fred's splintered personalities.
