I don't want to ban cell phone use in cars. I want to ban cars, morons in cars, life sentences for killers on cells in cars, or any combo of the above. Where's the link for that one?

I fail to see the relation between an accident without a phone caused by looking but not seeing and a ban of cell phones?

And why ban cellphones in cars? What's next? No talking to the driver? One can call handsfree and pay attention to traffic. One can also turn off the phone and be a complete moron.

The idiots that get into accidents while on the cell phone are the same idiots that get in accidents because their kid in the back seat distracts them, or the one that drops a cigarette in the crotch while driving, or the...etc

The bottom line is some people can drive with distractions and some cannot. Why punish people like me that can talk on the phone while driving? Why more laws at all? Please leave me and my freedoms alone :D

Enough said right there!!!

At the risk of getting waaaaaaay off topic... It is not possible to selectively pick and choose who can and can't drive properly while on a cell phone. I understand what you're saying, but the bottom line is very simply this... people are being killed by distracted drivers. That's reason enough.

A helmet and pads are all well and good, but we need a lot more protection than that. Cagers have to be more aware and, if anything, I think they're getting worse. We're talking about losing arms, legs, never walking again, dying. There is no argument strong enough that can counter making the road safter for us.

The point of my orignal post was that drivers are not educated about motorcycles on the road. There's more attention to the color of the curb where you park or 3 point turns.

No joke; yesterday I saw a fellow rider almost taken out. One of those massive Ford trucks rolled out from a drive way right in front of the rider. Had it been me, you'd be sending cards to my hostpital bed, but this guy was good or lucky. His rear wheel began to slide to the right and the bike began to lean to the left. An instant later the rear wheel caught traction and the bike snapped up and around the front bumper of the truck. The truck driver... never even acknowledged the rider.

Sorry for the soap box chest beating. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. No other experience makes me feel the same as when I'm on my motorcycle. I feel really happy.

This does not make me happy...

I think what is trying to be conveyed is the same people you are trying to take the cell phone's away from while driving will be just as distracted or unattentive with or without them. I talk on my cell phone while driving and I make it a point to be even more alert of what is going on.

When I smoked I dropped a cigaretter in the floor, I didn't put my head below the dash and try to get it. I pulled over.

Some would not have done this and no law is going to make unsafe drivers safe...

Your point is taken but it won't help. Just like the seat belt law. In Maryland it has been in affect for years and I never wear one and have only been caught once...

Good luck getting a law passed that will make you safer, I however think you are better off just knowing everyone on the road sucks...

My solution has always been is to require all drivers to operate a motorcycle for 1 year (northern states included) before the get an automobile license. That would weed them out.

My first car was a DT360. What was yours?

Parilla 250 Scrambler and a Triumph Tiger Cub

Sparky, sadly I'm realistic enough to know no amount of laws will make bad drivers better. On the other hand, educating drivers is another story all together. I think many drivers don't even think about riders. That implies they aren't looking for us.

Making it easier for them to see is a good start. Many people report that putting brighter lights on their bikes helps. I don't have them, but will. Other things help too. Bright colored jackets and helmets, etc.,

Anyway, I'm not saying anything new here. I think there are so many riders but our voices aren't heard. I'm showing my ignorance, but do we have a lobby like the NRA does. HAHAHA how about if we combine ours with the NRA. Now THAT would get drivers to be more careful. But of course, I'm not endorsing that people start using guns.

I sure won't argue that driver education should be better. I would love it if there was a motorcycle safety commercial on every hour on every channel (that has commercials). There is a motorcycle 'lobby' called the AMA and they do an okay job. I think they could be a LOT better and I think they should make me their President so I can get their stuff straight. However, your participation will only make it more possible for them to get better.

You know, we had no less than 36,254 fatal accidents per year since 1994. That is HUGE! I agree that driver safety should be a MUCH bigger issue! This is the #1 non-natural killer in America by FAR! 57% of these in 2004 were single vehicle accidents. Seems to me that education would be a great thing to improve upon.

Accident Stats

Compare that to 16,300 or so murders each year, and falling (per the trend)

crime stats

2,319 in our latest war (US soldiers that is) since March, 2003! (3 years)

Iraq Casualties

We have no clue how many drivers that are in accidents are in accidents because of cell phone distraction. However, 25% of all accidents are attributed to distractions. The #1 distraction? Other people in the car. NO MORE PASSENGERS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :haha:

I just really believe that if you start trying to eliminate every distraction, you have to get rid of the driver because they can be distracted. That might come sooner than we think with these Automatic roadways that are being tested.

Automatic Highways

So, when they come to take your FJR away because you can get distracted, you might just be glad we have a 2nd amendment because it'll be time for us to rise up :cownoy:

Driver education...let's rally round for better driver education (and better tests)...we could use simulators for testing! Think about it...include that motorcycle slamming into the test driver ;-)

Take my cell phone away, take my guns away, take anything away from me and you're are not being my friend.

Be careful about asking for more laws. The next new law may be one that bans motorcycles from the road. An extreme example, but not far removed from the way some people are trying to solve crime by banning gun ownership.

dmp & Honda monkey......how about hands free only while driving......or automatic weapons on bikes for moron cagers....how about a girl on every pool table....a yadda yadda yadda...(never ending thread????)
