The least you could do is give us the story. Did the parts wear out due to thousands of hours of hard use? Did they fail catastrophically due to an extreme situation? What really happened to the John Deere?
As expensive as 'green' JD parts are, 'yellow' JD parts are triple the price. I really don't know how they can charge what they do for parts. When I bought this JD, the local dealer was great, of course since then the owners have changed out the entire parts department with new personnel and, for me, it is not as sweet as once was. I'm just another 'gentleman rancher' e.g. low-life-scum who gets billed full right column pricing (max).I live about 5 miles north of the Mt Joy Iowa plant. They are a major employer in the QC area. I'm gonna guess those parts are effin expensive.Pretty much the only farm equipment I see around here is Deere. They have a really cool museum over in Moline Ill.
Fair questions. This JD model has a weak front wheel drive system. The entire front weight of the tractor, think full bucket of wet mud = HEAVY, is carried by two *relatively* small needle caged bearings. It's a 'Z' drive.. the power comes from the pumpkin, through a 90 degree bevel gear set, vertically then to another 90 degree bevel gear set, then to the tire. The vertical shaft carrying the load, the one showed as worn / scored, and it's associated roller bearings, is the weak link. JD designed this so the tractor can make incredibly tight turns, very narrow turning. The least you could do is give us the story. Did the parts wear out due to thousands of hours of hard use? Did they fail catastrophically due to an extreme situation? What really happened to the John Deere?
The cost with JD tractors is off the roof. I'm also restoring a 1936? Allis Chamlers 'M' model, and parts for it are less expensive...I was at the John Deere in Nacogdoches about a year back picking up some parts for our 5425 and saw a 7xxx in the bay with a busted rear axle of all things. The owner let it get away on an em an embankment and it rolled down backwards until it hit the other side. You don't even want to know what the bill was up to at the point at which i saw the tractor. There were a LOT of those machined pieces on the ground waiting to go in and more were on the way.....
