hehe - plans continue to firm up, now looking at doing this in June probably. But of course I have to keep tinkering with the route...Thoughts/feedback on this route:

https://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source...=7&dirflg=d

which is basically substituting Hwy 26 for I-84 - google has it taking a significantly longer time, but I would *think* 26 wouldn't be THAT much slower, but would love feedback from folks who have ridden it. Going through John Day should be a lot prettier to make it worth it.

Another alternate which keeps the time on I-5 down, but makes it short on total miles, is this:

https://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source...=7&dirflg=d

I really like it, but it shows 1,008 miles, which I worry is too close for variance.

Thoughts?

FJRay, if you are still interested, you would be welcome to join some or all of it. And if you know the roads on the ideas above, I particularly want your feedback whether you join or not :)

Hwy 26 can be patroled pretty heavy sometimes but you can usually get away with running 5-8 mph over so you could run at 60. There are some slow areas going through the fossil beds cause its twisty. The route is very doable and is senic except for I-5. I don't know on participating until you decide the dates but later in June will provide the most daylight.

Why not plan a ride that is 1001 miles? With the mapping programs and GPS you can't get any more acurate. Why live in the past and add another 30 miles just in case? I can see why that became a usual standard, but today, ????????? Don't worry, I sleep 8 hours.

I think I've set the route, which is pretty close to the MCT 2007 Alternate route which you all were so kind as to provide. First difference is to ride clockwise, and then the second adjustment I made was to use Hwy 26 through John Day, etc. instead of I-84 for the northern part of the route. So, like this:

If everything goes according to plan, the idea will be to ride this one of the last weekends in June.

I also got an opportunity to add another "tune-up" run. I have to teach a class for work on Monday/Tuesday the 17th and 18th of May in Folsom, CA so I elected to ride instead of fly the ~590 miles each way. I have personal plans on the 15th, so can't poke my way down there, but rather will ride mostly on I-5 down there on the afternoon of the 16th. And then back the afternoon of the 18th after my class is done. No certs or anything, but should be good practice. I'll log and get receipts to practice :)

Cross post to PNW and LD subforums, but after not being able to do this last year, I AM now doing it THIS WEEKEND (I'm excited)

Same route as my last post on this thread.

Any other Oregon riders want to join in? I know its very short notice, but if anyone can make it you'd be welcome, and I can provide a place to sleep before/after...
