Well new cam chain installed and guess what? Still ticking. Now the dealer wants about $400 to look into the still ticking problem. Said they have an '03 in the shop and it ain't as :dribble:  noisy as mine. I told them just fix it. So tomorrow I have to go in and sign a work order to keep exploring. I have a mind to call Yamaha and complain.

I don't know your situation, but its too bad you couldn't have found a dealer that you KNOW would have been easy to work with.

And I would definitely call Yamaha corporate. Be civil, un-emotional, and calm. But express to them your concerns. It may have a positive effect right away, and even if it doesn't, it won't hurt to start greasing the skids for any future communication that may become necessary.

Good luck.

$400 for what? Are they expecting 'you' to pay for the tick diagnosis? If so, that's a new one for me.

Call Cypress to get some answers before you go any further. IMHO of course.

I know their number well. Here it is: (800) 962-7926 ex 2,4 :D

Where are you located?

I live in Fremont, Ca. but the bike is in Santa ,Clara Ca. I am thinking why do they need the extimate? Just fix it. Yamaha knows what it is, so why are they dragging on fixing this one. The dealer even admits hthey have an another '03 in the dealership and it sounds nothing like mine. So whats the problem? I am hoping now that the find the problem so the yes covers it and I don't have to pay.

FJRVTX, If you do end up being diagnosed with a ticker you ultimately will not have to pay anything, definitely call yami customer service and express your concerns and if you feel the dealer is not competent ask them to direct you to a dealer in your area. The process is a time consuming pain in the ass but you need to be persistent.Good luck.

Your almost the same distance from the place that solved all my concerns with iffy stealers and put the faith back into my bike. Make a day of it to take your bike here and get it back in top shape. These guys will see you right trust me, they are a 5 star Yamaha dealer and are straight up. Call them and talk directly to the owner Jay.

Well add me to the ticker club too.

I started hearing it at about 8000 miles. At first was just interm. now at a little over 15,000 it sounds almost as bad as the sound link. Not quite as loud yet.

I swung by the dealer this afternoon after calling and explaining my situation.

They are a 5 star service dept. and admitted that they have not yet delt with this problem. The service manager sent a tech out to listen to it and he at first thought it was an exhaust leak. but once I reved it up and made the noise come and go at different rpms, he agreed it was valve noise. I am pleased that they didn't try to blow any smoke up my ass (yet). The service manager said right away that he is going to call Yamaha and see what they recommend doing first. I should hear from him tomorrow.

Just as a side note : I wish I had taken a picture of the look on the two of their faces after I told them the current mileage.

Service manager," When did you pick up Bike?"

Me, " May 28th."

Service Manager," And how many miles does it have?"

Me, " A little over fifteen."

Service manager," Uh... Thousand???"

Me, :D

I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that it will be taken care of in a timely fashion. At this point I got the feeling that they are on my side.

After a call to Yamaha by me this afternoon, a few hours later got a call from the dealer and Yamaha gave them the ok to look. Carbon build up on the valves and oil in the header. I get the fix. Yamaha gives them the parts, they don't have to guess. So in a few weeks he thinks, I think longer. Did tell them not to forget the head bolts and gaskets. One tech thought exhaust leak after they fixed the cam chain tensioner. But now all the noise on the left side. Hopefully soon no noise at all. :) :D

Are you talking about all FJR's, or just the ones covered by the warranty? My 03 is getting louder and louder. I bought it used, a few months ago and it now has about 25K miles. So far, it's not down on power nor burning oil.

I live very close to the Cypress office, and not too far from the dealership that someone else recommended.

They're probably going to require you to pay for a valve adjustment, since it's at 25,000 miles. After that, if they agree with you that it's noisey, the fix is factory sponsored. Never heard of anybody who had to pay to fix their own ticker.

Take it to Rancho Cucamonga and ask them to listen to it. That part should be free as well. Mine was at Wilson's in Fresno. You'll be in good hands there (Y.O.C.). Keep us posted.
