Just wondering if there is anywhere online I can hear this "ticking" everyone is referring to, I checked out Holeshots site but with that exhaust its hard to hear. I dont have it on my bike just want to hear it.

I was wondering why I never see a file. . .until I took my digital camera out to the garage and took about a 1 minute long video at idle and revving up to about 4k rpm. My FJR ticks quite audibly, yet for some reason that sound did not come across at all on the video. Wierd. I'll try again outside. . .maybe that will make a positive difference on which frequencies come through better/worse.

I guess my ignorance is showing again. I didn't realize you could pick up sound on video. Oh well, us Texans are always a little behind on the newest technology. We still use audio down here in the sticks. :haha:

A little hard to hear, I wish the stock exhaust was on so it could be heard better.

Hey I am still riding that ticker. Gets louder all the time and has started using a little oil, maybe. Will have it worked on this winter. Still runs like a raped ape.

Nonetheless, you'll be stunned at the amount of power increase you'll immediately notice the first time you ride the bike after the repair. The loss of power that occurs with a ticker is soooooo gradual, the owner barely picks up on it.

But you will when the bike comes back after the repair!

Yep, I noticed the performance difference last week when I drove the brand new FJR.It is absolutely much quicker and takes the RPM´s much faster than mine.

I have a ticker now, but when monday arrives, my baby gets new cylinder head and everything what she needs...Hope she is as fast as new FJR...And all goes under warranty!

I am obviously new to the board, and I have seen comments about ticking bikes (my 04 does it lightly as well) but I never stopped to read them... can someone either break down the situation with ticking engines for me real quick of post an internal link where I can find the info?

Try here when you have some time.

Impossible to break down the ticking situation as it doesn't appear to be dependent upon anything related to the bike, fuel, oil, plugs, break in method, etc. although I don't think anyone has tried to correlate the tick to the style of underwear worn by the rider

Best you can really say is that there is a small chance it MIGHT happen, most likely WON'T happen, get your YES Warranty now just in case.... $389 or so from D&H Cycle in Alabama if you still can.

My 05 has 18000 miles on it and all four cylinders are quiet when I listen to them with a rod or long screwdriver on the exhaust pipes. No abnormal noises from any part of the engine, and it's been ridden in anything from 35 to 110 degree ambient temperatures over the past year, some for long stretches at a time.

Thanks... I'll look into it, and listen closely to mine, just to be sure I'm not missing anything....

By the way, they're Underoos

Well, I just got off the phone with my dealer service mgr...it's a Ticker allright (03' with 18k miles). So far I have had to 'authorize' labor to check valves, and then to remove head. The valves were in spec and the cam chain quiet, so I hope this is leading up to Yamaha repairing under warranty as it is no doubt the valve guides. It will take the dealer a few days to get back to me, I hope the next post can contain good news.

At least Yamaha should be getting good at these repairs by now... :exclamation:

(added 09-02-05 yamaha is repairing under warranty, thanks to YES!) :D

Cool... thanks for the link to the Holeshot video. For any of you who may be ex FZ1 owners, it sounds almost identical (to me) to the "sewing machine" sound you get from an FZ1 engine with a shot cam-chain tensioner. Irritating as all hell when it really gets going!

Blue Bayou is tick free at 12k! B)

I for one have a ticker. I've know since it had 2500 miles on it thanks to Warchild answering my questions. I was at the EOM and many folks got to listen to her. Out of approx 100 bikes I heard at least 5 that were ticking. That test pool shows Yammie and their .3% of all FJR's sold in the U.S. is not accurate. I took her to the dealer yesterday and surgery will be in January. Buisness is slowest at that time. I now have 9100 miles on the scoot and it ticks like crazy especially when hot. While riding at EOM Doug Hines told me when he was behind me and I passed a car that he saw white smoke eminating from the right tail pipe and it smelled like oil. GREAT! Anyhow she will get fixed and I will try to get an audio clip with my laptop and post it somewhere. I think many more FJR owners have the tick but don't know what to listen for. I have noticed a reduction in power and when cold starting she is slgguish to come alive like compression loss. Sputtering and then finally starting. Life is grand for us .3% folks. My dealer was also telling me that he had confirmed what a forum member had said about a new valve seal. It was a good part number that was only found on Mammie Yammies mainframe computer but could not determine if it was specifically for the FJR. Hopefully it is a step to a fix. I will probably get a new 06 and hope this tick thing is a non issue. Ranting over! :(

That was my first inkling that I was going to have a problem, when a guy I ride with said I had white smoke out the right pipe. Left valve bad, smoke out the right, doesn't make sense but it's a ticker. I'm hoping that the performance is markedly better after the fix, cause the motor was feeling pretty 'agricultural' when I finally brought it in. Didn't seem to want to rev as freely and vibrated lots.

In the FJR's abscence, I've been riding my old ZX-11 and I gotta say it seems real smooth, faster and more comfortable, like an old familiar friend. Did a 300 mile day trip last weekend and didn't feel nearly as beat as after 300 on the FJR.

Spoke with Dan yesterday, should have it back October 9th after 3 weeks in the shop. Then I face the big decision - is the FJR all that or it is time to try a Ducati ST4s?

It's going to take a PC3 and a solution to the buffeting problem to keep me an owner.
