Tinnitus

I've had tinnitus since I was 40 years old. Some days the ringing is worse than others. Lucky for me it doesn't interfere with my sleep so far, but when I am in a loud environment it is difficult to hear normal conversation.

I always wear ear plugs when riding or shooting. You can't have too much ear protection.

It sucks but hey, it could always be worse.

I've had it for years. I don't notice it when I'm riding, which makes me want to ride more, so that's good, right?

I've had it so long that I just ignore it. Some folks aren't able to and others have balance issues with it. I think most of us that were in aviation,fast cars, shooting all have Tinnitus.

Too many years of firearms, motorcycles and flying helos with the doors off contributed to mine. It just Sucks!, even dealing with it right now in a quiet computer room, but focusing on something else or background noise helps a bunch. I always have a set of earplugs handy for anything that might exacerbate my Tinnitus. I've been dealing with it while sleeping by getting one of these white noise machines which helps immensely. Good luck and if the old saying holds true, "misery loves company" you've got plenty of company!

I first noticed the "permanent ringing" in both ears when I was 40 -- so been dealing with it for 27 years now. It's now "my friend" who I only notice when I don't concentrate on other things This coupled with some high frequency hearing loss ....... well ..... I don't suffer alone as it's an all too common ailment.

Yes. It is all too common, I suspect. I've had tinnitus in my left ear since age 14 due to surgery on that ear. At first I found it kind of devastating to cope with, as there was also significant hearing loss in what had been my "best" ear. But we all compensate to the extent we can. In my case, it has forced me to develop higher levels of concentration than I might have without this condition.

#1 reason - 45 years of wearing headphones turned up too loud in the radio biz.

#2 reason - 45 years of riding motorcycles without hearing protection.

Which brings up an interesting point...after some 20+ posts, only one or two HONEST pilots even mention motorcycles as a primary cause. Personally, I don't think anyone would buy it if I blamed the Doobie Brother's concert at Curtis Hixon Hall back in '76. But I AM surprised more of you don't admit the truth and place (most of) the blame where it belongs.....on the motorcycles we all love so much.

MissHowie just doesn't get it. When I say "HUH???" or "excuse me???" she goes in to slo-mo repeat mode of what she said. I have to tell her "I'm hard-of-hearing...I'm NOT retarded!"

I know there is suppose to be no cure for tinnitus but has anyone tried the product Quietus? I've heard about it but not from someone who's tried it.

I have the constant ringing/buzzing for many years. Riding motorcycles with loud pipes from age 12, hunting with no ear protection, working in large metal shops, and rock concerts and worst of all performing in rock bands for many years drumming next to extra loud bass/Marshall stacks, you guessed it, wearing little or no protection. I have NO personal experience with Quietus...was thinking about giving it a try myself, so I started some online research into the product. WOW!!! :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

mine got real bad right after Katrina...we had moved into a rental for 18months...next door to a fire house...finally after about a year and a half, the condition improved...I'm so thankful for that

I've had it since I was 17,(43 now). While jumping off a 15' cliff in one of my home town's gypsum quarries, I landed face first instead of feet first. This was my first jump, and I needed to clear a 4 foot piece of shoreline below, so I was leaning too far forward, and did a face plant in the water. For about two weeks after the jump, my hearing was poor. Following that was the ringing/buzzing. It has never been so bad that I sought a cure, but I worry about the hearing test portion of my D.O.T physical every 2 years. So far, I've passed.

Count me in with everybody else.....except now i spread the misery by hot-rodding tube amps ! Motorcycles, Guns, and electric Guitar and headphone abuse are my cohorts with a splash of Navy radioroom teletypes and beeping electronica... I've started wearing Hearo's earplugs the last 2 years when riding...i hate it in the city, but can feel my bike and its state of tune so much better when on country rides...i live ON the 3 sisters in the Texas Hill Country and have rediscovered them after 40 years due to the enhanced feel ! I still play in a band and i know a gig is coming cuz my ears are starting to clear up...as i always have music coursing through my head, i have learned to work this EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE into it...strange but true...so do what you can to protect whats left...and stay clear of snake-oil...i have found hemp-oil to be helpful...might as well be blind too...heheheh....

Cherry Bomb was tossed into the gas station restroom I was using at age 18. Been dealing with it ever since.

I tend to just ignore it since I have no other option. Strangely I do not hear ringing but more like crickets and birds

gone fuking mad. Ear plugs do help from really pissing off the birds and bugs but the only thing that really helps

is Makers Mark. I've tried it in the ears but by mouth works better. :to_become_senile:

I spent my first 8 years at a charter company in maintenance as an A&P/IA. Rig a CJ610 just once without hearing protection and you have permanent hearing loss. Combine that with riding a motorcycle occasionally without a helmet or earplugs and well, I don't have tinnitus yet, but I expect it. I do have a high frequency loss and can't hear conversations in a noisy environment. I do everything I can now to protect the hearing I have left.
