Hey BlueHammer,

is that flat black plasti-cote spray paint?

sure looks good.

plasti coat spray paint ? where is it ? it looks killer...just what i'm lookin for ! how do i find plasti coat spray paint ? thanks in advance from the ignorant.... :)

Warchild,
Have you done a write up on cutting the screen and tinting it?  I know you used flat black paint, but any chance there is a full write up anywhere?  I'm thinking of taking my stock screen and creating a summer cut down and tinted version as you did.

The screen is not cut down. That is the stock windscreen you see on my bike.

The paint I used was Krylon Satin Black, the very same that was used on the R1's exhaust covers a couple weeks ago.

The biggest ass-pain about this farkle is the painstaking application of masking tape on the outer lip around the perimeter of the windscreen. Still, the results are worth the effort.

I took some fine steel wool and "polished" the inside of the screen to prep the surface (so the paint adheres better).

Do several thin coats to avoid the possibility of runs/drips, and allow the screen to thoroughly dry in between coats.

I'm likely to go the paint route but wonder if since 2005, if anyone has found any decent alternatives to effectively tint/darken the OEM shield?

Also any more hints/tid-bits from those who have painted appreciated as well.

I painted my stock sheild, then I got Cee Baileys -2+3 dark tint it comes up to the top of my Garmin Zumo and I have cleaner air to the helmet

I just cut down a spare stock shield and will be using VHT Nite Shades to tint my shield. Used it on tail lamps of a custom truck I owned - made for platics tails lens, etc.

Am I the only one who occasionally looks through and not just over the windscreen?

When it's cold outside I'm right down behind that thing.

That paint turns red when lit? Wonder what happens when the sun shines on it? I do like that it is transparent paint.

It only turns read if you paint over a tail light.

It's as dark as you put it on - the more coats the darker it gets - so it should look like a tint - luckily I have 3 stock shields - one I cut down - one to test the VHT Paint on which I'm hoping to do a little elater today.

Finally got a shield painted with VHT Nite Shades - I'm not real crazy about it but still need to mount it on the bike to see what it looks like. Because Nite Shades it a transparent paint process you can tell it's been sprayed when there is more light behind the shield than in front of it - so I wan to see what it looks like mounted. Worse case I'll paint it solid black.

I have the dark tint CEE Bailey, as long as you aren't looking through it , it is great . ( I look over) . It is a bit dark otherwise.

Blasted the crap out of my shield with 2 more coats of VHT Nite Shades . . . now to wet sand it and clear coat it and remove the blue tape on the front side . . . Also, I found out that I can buff and polish all the blemishes out of the front side with Adam's Revive Polish mixed with a little Adam's Swirl and Haze remover . . . looks nearly showroom. Love his products . . . Waterless Wash is great for cleaning your road dusted bike when you really don't need to break out the hose.
