On average how does your tires wear front to back. I mean does the front usually wear faster than the back, vise versa or do they wear about even? Reason I'm asking is... Its time to buy a rear tire. My front tire is still good (Metz SportTec) showing no wear, just replaced middle of last summer. I want to replace with a set of PR2, but then I'll be pulling off a good tire (wasting money which I dont want to do). Is having a new matched set worth it???

You'll get alot of responses with this post..

For me, yes, running matched sets is optimal.

At least it used to be, now that $$ are tight I'm running them SkooterG style e.g. till cords show.

If I'm soon to leave on long distance trip, or known high speed run, I'll but freshies front and rear. If just running round the hood, with help readily available, I'll put worn tires back on to get the life out of them.

With most of my bikes I get two backs to one front. I admit I'm aggressive with the throttle. I do believe in matched sets, so once I find a tire I like, I just replace it with the same.

2 Backs to 1 front when commuting/Hwy travel.

1:1 when lots of hooligan time in the twisties (except it's the sides of the front tire vs. the center of the back tire that wear out).

Front & Rear new whenever either needs changed. Normally, the rear determines when I need a new set. Amazing how nice a new front feels even if "the chords aren't showing" on the old one. I average about 5-6K miles, and yes, that means I go through about 3 sets a year.

Cheap insurance... IMHO.

1.5 - 2 rears per front. Last 2 Strada rears were done on the sides before the center. But, I am an anomaly in that I almost never ride the slab.

Present Roadsmart rear appears to have many miles left at ~4500 miles. I am running it with a Strada front and they seem to play well together.

I go through them evenly. I got 13,701 miles out my metzlers (cord showing). I am on a pair of Roadsmarts now and have about 9000 miles on them so far and I think I might be able to make it to 11,000. I do most (95%) of my miles on the freeway.

On my 07 I got 7000 out of the front, and 10000 miles on the rear before swaping them out, went with the Metzler, stock tire and sticky as hell.

Its exactly the opposite for me I have 4300 miles on my tires and my front looks like a rectangle and my rear looks like it will be ready for the deep fryer to make some chicken wings...

Patrick, don't you just have a chase vehicle meet you with new rubber?Hooligan maximus.
Nah, I usually try to have them meet me at a predetermined spot (actually ordered a new rear at Roseville Yamaha this afternoon, with my personal best on a rear tire w/ 4,800 miles - at this rate I might make 5K = TOO much highway, not enough twisty lately). The front sidewalls are barely broken in.

(and what's up with the hooligan title - I was BEHIND your brother all day)

I used to get around 8-8.5K per rear and 11K for fronts. Then I installed GP Suspension and now I get 7-7.5 on rears and 10K on fronts and these are from the dual compound tires. My best combo was Storms on the front and PR2 on the rear. Most of the time it doesn't matter whether they are matched or not. You just have to try it. My first 7 sets were matched, now I don't care.

I ride with match brands and models. I replace my tires as needed, but for me that is usually both at the same time. On my 07 I got 8k out of the factory rear. The front was feathering pretty bad at that point, so I replaced both. BT021 tires served me well. On my Busa I run the BT016. After 1200 miles they still look fairly new, and feel like glue on the roads. :D

How people get such miles out these tires is beyond me.

Get about 6k out of the tires. Replace them both at the same time as they are equally worn on this bike for me.
