The trick is -- when you see smoke, blowing dust, etc. that appears to seriously restrict sight distance, you stop BEFORE you enter it where vehicles can still see you.

Approximately 13 years ago on I-5 just south of Fresno, there was a large dust storm. More than 100 vehicles were involved in three separate pile-up collisions. Trucks would barrel through the stopped vehicles like they were bowling pins and more cars would plow into the pile. This is not a good place to be.

If blinkers weren't misused so much, I'd say park with blinkers. The ONLY place they're supposed to be used is when not moving and on or near the roadway, thus the term "hazard" flasher.Too many people run with them because they have an "emergency," or drive with them because they think it increases visibility. So, if they were used correctly, blinkers mean, "I'm stopped - don't come at these lights." That said, I have to agree, pull it over to the rail or the edge of the shoulder, leave it dark and get away. If the ground off the shoulder is usable, get out there, even. There's also "Do not drive into smoke or fog." I guess you're just supposed to wait it out or turn around.

Well, maybe it's different with bikes but in the big truck world anything moving below 45 mph on the interstate requires flashers.

They can require what they want!! I would rather be alive to get a ticket than dead to get the toe tag. I cannot imagine a LEO giving you a ticket for going 30 MPH or so until you can safely get off the road and shut down. Slowing to 1/2 average speed is ONLY intil you can get stopped and off the road to shut it down.........., and do so without delay. You are an official sitting duck until then. The speed split is to mitigate front end and rear end hazards, since you dont know where it will be, but rest assured, it is waiting to get you .... soon......

cdogman, you have mistaken my post. I have no problem with what you posted, I was responding to the statement that blinkers are overused and that they should only be used when PARKED. The reason we are required to use them below 45 mph is because of speed differation, a lot of people out there have a real problem judging speed and distance. applying the flashers on a big truck below 45 mph is so that the car running up behind you at 70 or 75 knows your not doing the speed limit. From personal experience i can give you this, in states that have a split speed limit for trucks and cars "ie" ohio, ill 70mph for cars 55 for trucks we have had two accidents with our trucks in 10 years in both cases the trucks were running 55 mph in the right hand or slow lane, in both cases this was on a open stretch of road not in stop and go traffic or around a big city, and in both cases cars had run under the back of both trucks at over 70 mph. I understand your concept of turning of the lights and hiding once you are off the road esp. on a bike. Two years ago early one winter morning still dark out I'm heading into one of the shipping ports in n.j. heavy fog visability next to zero, but I wanted to get into the port and off the road before rush hour traffic. As I'm pulling down into the port there are about three cars following me I figured they worked there, i pull over at the entry gate to the port and park. After about five minutes this guy is knockin on my truck door all three cars where lost they where following my TAILIGHTS didn't have a clue where there were or how they were going to get outta there!!!!!

P.S. My heart goes out to the family I can only hope I would never have to deal with losing both of my parents at the same time. Very sad incident.

No, but it was funny I had to get a hold of port security guard to escort them off the property. I mean you literally could not see 5 feet in front of you. I bet it was the last time they blindly followed a trucks tailights lol.
