Any problem with running the battery tender connector through a direct wired “Hella” type power outlet to keep battery charged?

I use a battery tender with storage mode btw, fwiw.

Thanks gents!

Should work. I assume by "direct wired" you mean the outlet is attached directly to the battery by a fused wire.

Depends on how it was wired and the amperage. Assuming it's a 12v directly to the battery and not switched with the ignition and/or relayed. If switched it wouldn't be able to charge while the key is off. If you get voltage off of it when the key is off...it probably is OK. Memory is Battery Tender Jr.s are 0.75 amps IIRC and full size 1.25 amps. I know the Powerlet version of BMW-style plug are 15 amps....so the math is probably fine assuming the Hellas are the same.

Battery Tender Jr. wired directly to the battery with a fuse. That connection leads out between the fairing and the frame on the right side and gets tucked in when riding. Convenient and the little exposed connection is easily connected to the Battery Tender connector. Works like a charm.

Just as a matter of curiosity, how long do you let it sit without riding? Mine has sat over two months with no tender and no charging and started without any issue. Unless you have accessories with significant ignition-off draw, you may not even need the tender. Mind you, I only got 10 years and 160,000 miles out of the OEM battery.

Hey RossKean

I use a tender on all my bikes and this is the first FJR so I do not know if the “need” exists.

Obviously you have a great track record of not using a tender.

I think I’ll alternate the tender.

FWIW I actually have ridden at least once a month for the last 4 years so, maybe it’s overkill.

Thanks,

Yup. Mi tu. BT to Jastech plug to jastek socket to battery.

I always plug in the tender after a ride. Certain conditions don't get the bike's charging system up into the positive range. I figure it's easier on the bike to always start with a full bank account.
