I'm kidding about turning the FJR into a rocker-recliner but I would like to make the bike more comfortable. My wife and I are 65 and 64 respectively but we still love to ride. I've got an '08 FJR and I'd like to make a few mods to make the bike more comfortable for us even on short rides around town. Right now I'm thinking about risers, a wider and taller windshield, maybe some softer hand grips, etc. You get the idea.

I'm hoping you can offer some suggestions, and be specific with brands and such, because we're both not ready to give up riding yet. We'd just like to be able to stay on longer before we have to get off to strech and rest our butts.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Bob

Bob, riser and highway pegs make the ride easier, a seat, Russel, Mayer or others will be heaven sent. Vista cruise lock helps, an Audiovox Cruise control is the ****, all of them are farkles, and the list goes on and on..

Lots of options to enhance the FJR experience. Windshields are unfortunately a very personal preference, so what works for one person doesn't always work for others. For starters, look at Rifle, VStream, Yamaha Touring screen and Cee Baileys. I have three, yup three Cee Baileys and am a fan with the service and quality that they provide. Check out the Cee Baileys site for specific information. Not cheap but worth the price of admission.

Good luck and keep riding!

Richard/Fairlaner modified his FJR to look like this...

He loves it now. :clapping:

For me, the saddle was the biggest thing. The best are Russell, Bill Mayer, and Rick Mayer. The Russell owners seem happiest. I love my Rick Mayer and also loved the Bill Mayer I had on an earlier bike. An advantage of a Rick Mayer seat is that he has seat pans in stock so you don't have to go through down time on the bike while your waiting for your own seat to be rebuilt.

Second was the shield. escapefjrtist hit all the biggies above. I really like my Vstream but I also use a set of spacers with it that aren't available anymore.

Third is highway pegs. Being able to move my legs to a new position helped long riders a lot. I went with Wild Bill's mounts and Kuryakin extenders and pegs. Search the forum for that and you'll find several examples.

The throttle lock is nice but makes the least difference for me.

Tried bar risers and took them back off. I was more comfortable in the stock position. And that gets to the heart of the matter. The bike fits different folks different ways. You'll have to play around a bit to get your own optional ergos. That said, taking care of your butt seems to be the key thing for most of us, so start with the seat. And changing the seat should come before the others since it may change your position on the bike and you might end up having to start over with the other stuff anyway.

Good luck!

The five most important items for improving comfort on the FJR are: seat, seat, seat, windshield and handlebar placement. After that, types of grips, grip heaters, heated clothing and stuff become important. But I'd tackle that seat first.

FWIW, I tried a CeeBaileys on my bike first and it was too Jimmy Buffeting for me.. I bought a CalSci XL and it is mucho better. YMMV.

Good luck. Its a great bike. If I ever wear mine out, I'll most likely be shopping for an '08. so take good care of it. ;)

For me in my quest it has been

1 Heli triple clamp

2 Sargant +3/+4 windshield

3 Corbin seat

4 BrakeAway Throtlle lock

5 Frame sliders

This is my top 5 Some are on some are ordered and awaiting delivery

I think my next 5 are

GPS

Grip puppies

Soft 3rd bag for easy removable (Don’t like the looks of the hard 3rd bags on the bike)

Highway pegs

And yes A CUP HOLDER! :p

Answers to your questions:

1. The most popular riser for a Gen II is a Helibar. It brings the bars up and back. You can add one additional 3/4" Heli riser without changing the cables.

2. The larger windshields that most prefer are either California Scientific or Rifle.

3. Grip puppies are foam pads that go over your OEM grips and are soft material and inexpensive.

4. Russell seats are the most popular long distance seat and are extremely comfortable. Followed by Bill Mayer, Rick Mayer, and Sargent seats. Corbins are a love hate relationship but often favored by vertically challenged riders.

Good luck and keep riding!

Hi Bob

Well I will be 65 in a couple of months and also have an '08. My last bike was a Wing and I really do enjoy LD riding. Before I picked the bike up I had the dealer install risers (pulled back for a mor upright position). By the time I got the bike home I had about 1500 miles on it and IMMEDIATELY ordered a Russell seat. First custom seat I've ever had & well worth it!

I'm not sure I'm as willing to go those 1000+ miles days anymore but 600 or 700 are pretty comfy. I have put quite a few farkles on and the seat is definately the biggest improvement. Mirrors are the second - I think they were oem FZ1 mirrors and they make life easier on the road.

As stated before iys going to come down to personal preference

I've only had mine a month and went with grip puppies, 5/8 inch lowering bars and bar risers. It already had a Vstream, dumped the Sargent seat and went with a Corbin (like it much better). Just got back from an 750 mile round trip and was very comfy.

Another thing that's really important was the throttle spring mod.

Hi, my name is Mike and I'm a Farkleholic...I've come to Farkle Anonymous at the gentle prodding of my family and friends

I will attend all monthly meetings here at Farkles Anonymous

I will daily ask my higher power for help with my addiction

I will no longer visit dealerships, ebay, or internet stores

I will cancel my motorcycle magazines, journals, and my AMA membership

If tempted, I will call my sponsor RadioHowie for help and advice

(Howie is on the "other" forum and his '04 is bone stock)

======================================================

Important to me for comfort is a Sargent Seat, Airhawk Air Pad, Wild Bill Highway Pegs, Cal Sci Windshield, and for safety/paint protection, a tank protector & R&G Sliders. There are grip puppies and throttlemeister and a Superbrace. To help power the electricals, the bike has a Eastern Beaver fuse block.

There are stacked two sets of risers to bring the bars up, back, and spread out 10 degrees from stock

Ok, from left to right:

FZ1 mirrors with MaxView Blind spot mirrors

Audiovox Cruise Control Pad

J&M CB radio with MP3 plugged in and weather radio and passenger intercom...J&M headset with two speakers

Zumo 550 GPS with bluetooth...talks directions and also can receive and make cell phone calls...speaker in left ear

Datel Voltmeter

clip on drink insulator

black switches are three way for front and rear hyperwhites...run front ones solid all the time...leave the rear off

during PGR (Patriot Guard Riders) funeral escorts, click the switches to flashing and white leds act as strobes front and back

RAM cupholder

there's a two way switch switching between separate horn buttons or hit either horn button and both horns blow

this is Stebel Air Horn on TOG (tip over guard) and Fiamm disc horns replacing stock horns

there's a two way switch either hooking up the front hyperwhite to the headlight relay so it's only on

with the engine running like the headlight, or it's on unswitched power. I can use it for emergency flashers without

the key in

12 volt cig light plug cluster - MP3 charger, 2 minature led flashlights charge

mode

Powerlet plugs in black panel - one switched with key powering up GPS, CB,

and Radar Detector

other plug always on to plug in battery tender

Switch with led indicator velcroed to side of front brake master cylinder - turns on off front Lazer Light bullet fork lights

Thermometer

Adaptiv Radar Detector with triple led visual warning on dash and wireless

audio-speaker in right ear

this unit velcros with industrial strength product to top of the front brake

master cylinder...found the cord would

unplug itself intermittently, so rubber band is a keeper on the cord pulling

it toward the unit at the plug
