After 9 months of not having a bike. I finally joined the ranks of FJR owners. Yep, after 2 days and 1650 miles, I got my brand new 2008 FJR AE back to the house late last night. I couldn't wait to ride her this morning but then I ran into issues. First issue, battery was drained so it had to be charged. Second issue, the little plastic fairing that coves the battery is a brute biotch to get back on. Next, two of the windscreen screws would not come out and stripped. The dealer had to take the windscreen off to get it in the van and I guess they put the screws back in the holes a little snug. These are crappy plastic screws anyway. However, only two of them were stripped so I put the windscreen back on with the remaining 5. I'll get the dealer to remove the other 2 at first service. It is holding fine for now. Then, my next backrest wouldn't fit correctly. The screws are the right size because I tried them. When you put the backrest plate down and then try to put the bolts in, it feels as if they want to strip so I guess with the plate down, the screws are not lining up correctly. The wife was bummed but she rode anyway. Finally, I looked at the lower part of the engine inside the fairing and it looks like the metal has cracking on the outside. I've included the picture, let me know if any of yours is the same or if this is something I should worry about. It is not leaking or anything. O.K. as far as riding. I LOVE this thing. It is so much more comfortable than a sport bike and the heated grips work great. The shift has a little more hesitation than I remember on a test ride but nothing that bothers me and is just as fast as standard shifting. She handles well and the wife is much happier on this steed than on my R6. Anyway, can't wait to play with her more. Please let me know if the engine is a concern or if it is natural.

congrats on the new ride! They are fun to ride! My wife liked when I switches as well! These are great touring bikes for 2 up and a blast when just get on it.

Congrats on the new bike. Very nice. The plastic screws are designed to snap off in case of an impact, or you going over the bars. It's a 'feature'. Some just replace them with stainless steel screws. My screen broke anyway in a low side, then popped off, so it's not like the screws will save the screen.

The "cracks" on the engine block are actually casting markings from the mold. No concern there. You can see these on every FJR and no reported leaks have occurred. I work with castings every day, it's just a normal facet of the process.

On the backrest, w/o knowing what version you have or how it mounts, I can't really help there. I agree, it sounds like the holes are not aligned. Perhaps use some small straws or skewers to drop through the plate into the holes and see what the angles are, then some careful slotting of the holes in the mounting plate will solve the problem?

Shifting - Flick the button/trigger rather than a more deliberate push or pull and it shifts faster.

Enjoy your AE. Check out Tech Page especially the links at the bottom.

For the Gen II dash panel removal, here is a nice write up - Gen II plastic removal

Several good hits came up using This including one for the '06-09 Bin-O-Facts on this forum, which you should immediately go read.

Ugar,

Congratulations on the FJR.... it looks good on you. Where did you get it and what area do you live?

Thanks man!!! I live just outside of Athens but I went to Oklahoma to get it. Pretty good deal and the dealership was VERY nice. None of that, "I'm doing you a favor selling you a bike" crap. The owner, salesman, and service tech all came out to say thanks and spent quiet a bit of time just chit chatting with me. The owner was so down to earth that I didn't even know it was the owner until later. All of them knew me by first name when I got there. The dealer is Road, Track, & Trail in Muskogee, OK. They were great to do business with.

Ugar,
I assume you mean Athens Georgia..right? Did you ride it back and how was the trip on the FJR?
Yeah, LOL, Athens, GA. No, I brought it back in a cargo van to keep the miles off of it. I wanted to ride it in GA first. I took the wife out for a nice ride and lunch today and she really enjoyed it.

Well....why did a "new" battery die on you so quickly? Any ideas? Did you run the grips the whole trip home? Was there an accessory on the bike in the "on" state all night by mistake? Let us know what you find.

Hope you have performed your first service by now...engine oil...rear drive oil...etc.

Enjoy the bike.

I had the bikes electrical on in the van for a few minutes without knowing. It still had power, just not enough to turn it over. After I ran it for awhile today, I had no other problems with it. It is a 2 year old battery also since the bike is an 08 model. Nah, haven't done the first service yet since it's only got 65 miles on it.

Got one just like it.........they are a blast. With the electric shift I have been getting smoother shifts with the foot than with the hand shift.

congrats ugar-6! My new 08 is over two months old and still 0 miles. Still two feet of snow in the front lawn but there is a forcast for a nice weekend coming up and think I will have to break it out.
