You want to see what these competitive rallies are like as a newbie or do a little tune-up as a veteran and live somewhere in the Pacific Northwest? A super cheap 7 hour scavenger hunt has been going on for some years in the thriving metropolis of Umatilla, Oregon. It's a fun, simple, and interesting rally on some roads you've probably never seen in NE Oregon.

2011 Umatilla Lions Scavenger Hunt

Saturday, May 21, 2011

8 a.m. at Spillway Park, McNary Dam, Umatilla, Oregon.

For past write-ups of my adventures....as a bridesmaid both times...rookies rule this event. ;)

We're talking like $30 or less to enter (heck I gave 'em $40 and thanked them profusely for the cheap rally experience). And I've gotten probably double or triple that in raffle items! This year they're talking about a dinner at 4 p.m. after the event. It's simple, elegant, a one-pager, and still a great opportunity to try some strategy.

ALSO! My place is open to whoever wants to travel for this. I'll do a BBQ the Friday night before for an LD riders wanting to come to event.

I did this last year and had a great time. Probably will be there this year but not sure yet. For you NW riders it is right in the back yard and the roads are great. Matt does a great BBQ.

will take that offer. will PM you later for details and what to bring for BBQ stuff :D
Whew! I was having to hold off a certain dude from Vancouver trying to take your bed. It's yours...and looks like 2 coming so far!

He can have the couch cause he had the suite last year. I might consider sharing if I get to be on top

Let see how much support we can get from the rest of you NW clowns. Somebody tell the old man there will be PIE. :p

You might make it three, Matt. Just saw your email (it got thrown into my spam box), so I'll be responding to that later today.

Looks like I may be interested. My course finishes up this Sunday and then I have 2 months off. I want to fit in as much riding as possible during that.

Sounds like fun. Can I come? If I can get my back straightened out and maybe get over to Rich's for a new seat. Anybody want to ride over together Friday and maybe split a hotel the night before?

Silly me...I was thinking of riding down to Portland the night before, and then across to Umatilla the next morning. I just realized that will mean 4 hours of riding through horrible traffic, 4-5 hours of sleep, and then another 4 hours in the wee hours to get there by 8 AM.

Sounds like fun.

The wifey told me to adjust the plans and ride closer to the start location. I might take you up on that offer Dzane.

When could you get away on Friday the 20th? IF we could take the day to ride we could avoid slabbing it and take some interesting routes to get to Tri-Cities then park it for the night there. I could leave at any time on the 20th, meet up in Monroe and head over to Wenatchee then south on 28, 281, 26, 17, or 243, 240. Either way probably take 5-6 hours to Tri-Cities. Maybe we could even take the time for a run up 142 from White Salmon to Bickleton. I got to get tires!

I'll need to see how things are shaping up at work. I may be able to take off a few hours early. Remember, Matt is hosting a BBQ on Friday, and I hear it's pretty good. Might be nice to stop by and meet the other fella's.

Yes it would, and I thought of that. I'd like to attend the BBQ and find out what to bring. He might even have a place for us to put down or know of a good clean cheap hotel. I stayed in Centralia on Tech Day night in a nice place for only $59. Hasta be places like that over there.

I'd say come on over and crash....I had 5 people last year coming over, but only one came. So, I have 6 known people saying they're staying...and haven't bailed or anything.

Regardless, there's a Sleep Inn at Road 100 and I-182 about a mile from my place or a Holiday Inn Express at Road 68 and I-182 also nearby in Pasco.

I'd suggest your preferred beverage that fits in a side case to the BBQ. Send a PM for more details.

Matt,

I can't make this ride (my son has a baseball tournament in Yakima that weekend), but if you need overflow sleeping my travel trailer could be used Friday and Saturday night. I live about 15 min. away from Matt's place.

Just trying to help if needed. Heck, if you have room I'd like to head over and just BS with you all Friday night if I can get out. :)

How are your plans shaping up Low? I am headed over to Rich's today for a custom seat fitting tomorrow and that will be the tell on my back, whether or not I think I can ride over to Umatilla. You gonna be able to ride over? Any body else from North Sound going to Umatilla?

Won't really find out until later in the week. Got some stuff coming down the pipe and I've been told by one person who likes to mess with my life that I shouldn't plan on leaving early.

If you want to get more riding in, you can head out before me and I'll find my own way.

Friday night BBQ at my place in Pasco is shaping up nicely for those riding the rally the following morning. I'm planning some Montreal seasoned steak, grilled asparagus, and open up a couple bottles of red wine.

Any last minute folks planning to run the rally and want dinner Friday...shoot me a PM for details.

That looks like a mighty fine spread, Matt!

Looking ever more likely that I won't be able to leave until 4:30 on Friday, so I will buzz on down straight from work. Probably won't arrive there until 8:30 - 9:00, depending upon traffic and any backups on I-90.
