WFO Co-Rallymaster and WPF "GateKeeper" HMarc Lewis took a great shot of these nasty little fuckers on HWY 305 north of Austin:

Dayum Dale, that almost looks biblical!

Just my luck, I plan on being on that portion of 50 west of Austin coming into Reno.... anyone know what the lifespan of those little suckers is?

Don't worry,

About that time you'll be ready for a snack!

Once under your wheel and sprayed on the plastic, maybe 0.5 seconds? :D

The problem with this insect is that once one of their buds gets whacked, its lunch time for everyone else, cannibal style. So the road just gets jammed with the feasting of the dead.

MMMMmmmmmm ... Protein Shake anyone? :puke:

Rough guess, how many miles of them do you have to drive through on 50 west of Austin?

Here you go, just to get you in the right mood for the ride.

At various twisty sections around Austin, maybe a few miles on and off. Then a bunch more on some flat section leaving west on 50. I didn't break any tires loose, just took it easy between the crickets and the NHP I spotted hiding off to the side of the road while descending the mountain.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

TCFJR, your route between stops 5 and 7, on 49?

Uhh, uhh, thats Jungo road. I have friends who've been airlifted off that road.

Please avoid that road. Please.

To say that the FJR1300 is ill-suited to attempt Jungo Road is a gross understatement.

This is NOT the path you want to take, I assure you. It would be much wiser to stick to normal asphalt. Jungo Road is primarily ruts, rocks and sandy dirt. Avoid on a heavy bike like the FJR.

SR 49 aka Jungo Rd. is cruel hoax perpetrated on the unwary by who ever is in charge of maps and highways and such in NV.

It's safe to assume that a motivated rider can maintain BBG+ averages between Austin and Battle Mountain, and from Winnemucca to Gerlach to I-80, right?
Rickie Carmichael couldn't maintain a BBG pace on Jungo Rd.

Thanks for the details on Jungo Road - that's why it's great to have all of the experience available on this forum!

Here's another alternate route I've been playing with:
