I do most of my own maintanence, but I'm not sure if I'm comfortable doing the Valve adjustment. What have you guys had to pay to have it done?

it isn't real hard to check them and most of the time they are within spec. i checked mine in the process of chasing the "tick" and found if you are carefull it isn't that bad. if you do your own make sure to put new orings on the coolant pipes or you are asking for trouble. if they require adjustment is isn't that much deeper to pull the cams and change shims.

Regardless, has anyone out there had the job done that would be willing to mention what you paid? At this point it isn't the technical nature but the lack of a working space that will soon be my problem. I'm transferring to San Diego for 9 months of school and won't have a garage to use.

I'm headed over to Sunnyside next week to get valves checked. Was quoted $290, which is (worst case) actual valve adjust needed. Apparently the need to adjust is pretty rare especially on the first go around. There are several other items on the maintenance schedule they will take care of.

I've also done most of my own maintenance but this is one item I'll leave to a good shop. Having seen them work on FJRs during their open house Tech days, I have supreme confidence in them, unlike my local shops. At 31K miles, looking forward to a professional overview and to take care of stuff I let slide. I'm lucky they are only about 400 miles away via some twisty Oregon roads. :agent: https://www.sunnysidemotorcycle.com/

Thank you very much SkooterG and Yambone. I've only got 27k on mine so hopefully it will just be a checkup.

The VAST majority of those who have reported the results of the first valve check reported everything in spec, and no adjustments. There have been just a few exceptions.

For my FJR, mechanic reported all within spec, but 3 were near the limit of tolerance, so he re-shimmed those three.

27k valve interval is simply outstanding, so to me its a no-brainer paying somebody a few C notes to have it checked properly and providing some piece of mind.
