So we're experiencing some unusually warm weather for the UK.

Went to my bike today. It's parked in my garage, no direct sun on it. Its temperature gauge showed this:

(Click on image for larger view)

That's 31C. Or, if you prefer, 87.8F.

For us, that's hot.

Went out for a bit, no problem so long as the bike was moving, but when stopped in traffic in the sun I did go all clammy.

As an aside, my web server resides in the roof space of the house. (SWMBO is extremely pleased it's not normally visible, which is why it's there.) However, my roof space is getting extremely hot, I'm guessing something like 50C (122F), which caused my server to die a few days ago. Actually the power supply of the disc drive said "enough" and shut itself down.

I've taken steps to help it, disconnecting the computer (Raspberry Pi) load that was sharing the disc drive's power supply and giving it its own, and opening the disc drive box so that the drive can be cooled separately, also putting a fan to waft (the hot) air over the lot.

It's been holding up so far.

Graph of the last 4 days:

(60C is 140F)

I'm logging the cpu core temperature, you can see it live here.

Weather forecast is for more of the same over the next few days. So, if my pictures fail to come through, you'll know why

When things cool down, I'll box everything back up, and await the next really hot weather. This could be a long wait ...

I was in Cornwall last September, for my nephew's wedding, it was 28C. Of course, the next day it was 20 and pissing down.

Never really pictured Derby as the Torremolinos of the UK.

Surely you expect no Floridian sympathy from me! :p

And: electronics in the attic??!?!?!? WTF? I can't put empty suitcases in the attic!!!!! They come all apart and stuff! I'd bet my attic reaches 120 degrees in the winter!

Lol, sorry man, not a lot of sympathy here in the states. Out west they've had triple teen temps ( upper 40s to 50C) for extended periods this summer.

We rode in a charity ride today and it was 29-30C and tought it was a perfect day.

<--- how we dress when its 87. If we did not ride at 87 we would not ride from May till the second week of October. It is all relative -- dress right -- drink plenty and ride on

Derby is only 1.3 degrees of latitude further north than Kamloops. Truro in Cornwall about .4 degrees south. Make of the weather what you will !

Certainly not after sympathy! just informing those who think UK weather is always cold and miserable what it can get up to. I guess your suitcase is killed by the humidity and bugs you get.

87 measly degrees?? Gimme a break.
If I put my computer in my attic, it would come through the sheetrock...Melted.
This isn't a normal PC dissipating 150-plus watts, it's a Raspberry Pi dissipating less than 5 watts and a NAS box powering 1 disc drive (15-20 watts?). Normally it would run pretty cool.

87 degrees in Florida is sweater weather!
I've been to Florida several times. I know why you wear sweaters in what we would call warm weather. It's because your diners and bars run their air conditioning to about 55F. You have to wear a sweater to avoid freezing to death.

If I had to put a pc in the attic, I'd box it in and run an AC duct to it.You do have AC don't you?
Yep, even if it is 50Hz not 60Hz. See posts around here.

Yep. As I said above, no way looking for sympathy. OTOH, I'm not going to invest in a camel-back just for a few days.

See comments above about dress in Florida.

Wife wouldn't let ya put the server under the bed, eh?
Being in the UK, it would risk getting pee'd on.

Gazunder:

A chamber pot for the collection of faeces and urine, so called because it gazunder the bed.

Anyway, under the bed it might get hot from other sources of warmth

People here in Palm Springs would kill for 87F.

It sure beats the two days of 122F last week.

Boy, did I time this trip just right or what?

I'll toss you some sympathy. It has been uncharacteristically warm here in New England as well. When the temps hit the upper 80s and 90s we yanks don't do real well either. Today we made a loop through western NH and VT and it was pretty sweltering. I'd much rather ride in sub freezing temps than when it's too hot. You can always put on more clothes or turn on the electrics, but you can only take so much off.

The only thing that ruined that picture was the doofus on the front lookin' back.

"You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser...
You gotta be hard (edit: I think he had that one covered?), you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger...
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together"

edit - BTW, did anyone notice how low the tread was on that guy's back tire? What a safety risk.

No? I didn't think so.

it was 90 degrees in Greenville Maine yesterday. We rode up north to avoid the Mass heat wave. Plan fail! But ithe scenery is MUCH better up around Moosehead Lake and the traffic is almost nonexistant. So still a worthwhile ride.

OK hijack over : and no sympathyfor mcatrophy. not now anyway with the current New England forecast.

Hijack renewed (hey... this is NEPRT already)

For those not acquainted with the area, Greenville is way the frog up in Maine, where the dirt roads are the only way to get around, and the moose outnumber the humans by about 100:1

If you look at a map of Maine you might think: "Oh central Maine..." but you'd be wrong. Look what is up above it. Logging roads and paper company lands is all.

I canoed most of the Allagash waterway when I was a young(er) stud, and it was an experience of a lifetime. When you can go for several days of camping and paddling without seeing a single other soul in the middle of the summer "tourist season", yeah you might be a red neck in Maine. I sure hope that it is still the same.

I suddenly feel a need to revisit.

Nope, guilty. I did look at the bottom of her feet tho. One to see if they were black, the next to vision the spikes in the pegs and how they must of felt. Nothing else, honest
