This years WGI ride is in the books....

So this is more of a feeler (inquiry) if I should organize a group ride for '13 combined with this epic ride on the famed Watkins Glen International Speedway and a Mini Grand Canyon ride.

The legend that loves to be ridden...

What we have here in the Finger Lakes NY area is mostly boring roads (ah that got your attention!) but great scenery with all of our clean lakes almost banging into one another. Terrain is generally quite flat (except for Southern Tier) so that doesn't make for many good twisties but we do have one major thing (besides all the Wineries ...and over 200 of them BTW and tastings that flow on a daily basis ;)

This years ride was held Sept 1st, truly awesome and all who attended raved about how cool and surreal it was to "ride the track". Now if your a NASCAR or INDY racing fan this will probably mean a lot more to you as to actually see and feel the elevation changes and the turns, it's just amazing! Yes, you have to sign a waiver n show insurance blah blah. There is a donation to do this and it all goes to Charity to help benefit the University of Rochester Alzheimer's Research Center. $1100 was raised this year :yahoo: and maybe with some of your help we can do much more. All makes welcome, I even saw a scooter.

So the Glen is just part of this wacky idea, To make this more of a full event I also want to incorporate a "Letchworth" Run. OK, WFT is Letchworth right? Letchworth St Park has been deemed the "Grand Canyon of the East". Not sure I would go that far but it is spectacular in a smaller scale. This areas ride will be highlighted by a full dual run (south to north and back) and the road follows the Genesee river bed most of the way. It's not a power-rush lay the bike over type of trip so we will call it more of a "smell da flowers" run. The canyon ride is about 15mi. each way. It's of course a Kodak moment happening 360 degrees. I mentioned Kodak b/c Rochester NY is home to Kodak so how appropriate right?). Only (slightly) bad side to this is the fall foliage will not quite be hitting on all cylinders yet (later Sept would be optimal but then the Glen ride would be out :(

Here's some Letchworth shots....

So as said, this is just a feeler to see if it sparks any interest to anyone here. Myself and a few friends will do this again next year and welcome any of you that would like to partake. The date will revolve around the Saturday Watkins Glen (track) ride. The organizers are planning for around the same date in '13 so were thinking the 1st week in Sept. Not sure about other ride conflicts but as said I cannot change the date unfortunately. I'm shooting this out almost a year in advance mainly cuz peeps (especially their better halves!) like to plan ahead... and mainly because it's still fresh in my head

If we proceed with interests, I can start some plans and research like discounted group hotels n such.... (to be continued?)

I would definitely be interested! I remember my parents taking my sister and I up around the Finger Lakes one summer and the scenery was awesome. We also took a day and went up to Niagra.

Thanks for the pictures speedy. I have ridden Sears Point racetrack a couple times, it is SO fun to ride on a road course track. Nice mix of bikes and good on you folks for raising $1100!

Question: what's up with the picture of the Dam but no water stored? Did you drink it all? Used it to make beer? Inquiring minds want to know.

Now that is sum funny shazitt!

?> More so because there really is a brewery on that river but more river-end (in Rochester) called the Genesee Brewery Co. Not my choice of beer at all but in the old days I remember my parents having the fridge stocked with Genny Cream Ale. Us kids would sneak a few out and later deemed it "Green Death".

My wife and I rode out there to the Mt. Morris dam earlier this summer and I had the exact same question! The dam was built to protect Rochester from the major flooding that seemed to occur about every seven years or so. Most of the time the water flows straight through the base of the dam, but if there is heavy rain and flooding is imminent, they choke it off to maintain a "normal" flow out the other side and let the water back up behind the dam. It actually saved Rochester from a flood while it was still being constructed, so someone knew what they were doing!

This ride sounds interesting and we'd probably be up for it!

This looks like an awsome idea. I'm down if I can get out of work.
I'd pencil that ride in, looks awesome.
So we got some interest, I know it's early as crap but I just wanted to see if it ruffled any feathers. :)

I just would have to iron out if it's a cramped single day ride or maybe a more complete and less rushed 2 day event. The epic race track ride will most definitely be on Saturday again and I'm thinking 1pm sign-in. This kinda shoots the other planned ride in the foot b/c the Letchworth with combined lower Canandaigua Lake, Naples Valley ride (some of the nicer motorcycle roads) taking up a complete day by itself especially considering we need a great place for lunch.. yep, sum good inexpensive eats known simply as "the refresher!".

So waffling right now, Ad-lib is always open but wadda ya think?...

A: 1-day Saturday (with shorted Letchworth and scenic run revolved around track day). Myself and friends would pre-ride all planned routes of course but it's kinda of iffy on the track schedule and how many bikes showup. Being this is smack dab in the middle of the day kinda messes up (or really shortens) the other ride. Sunday is ride home day either way.

-or-

B: 2-day Fri & Sat; Southern Tier excursion Friday with a full Monte of Letchworth and western Finger Lakes region, nice lunch stop midway. Prob a breakfast roundup 7:30am and kickstands up at 9am to ~5pm ride. Happy Hour (or course!) after with maybe dinner planned as group or on your own. Saturday we do the track ride (of course!) but we could fit a morning ride in ahead with a breakfast stop, and we could have maybe an Ithaca (home of Cornell) run to the East one lake over (Cayuga Lake) and a run up the side which is Rte 89.

SO- nothing is even penciled-in at this moment. "CBR Stan" even mentioned planning a bus/limo ride to visit wineries. We're friends with one of the Limo Co's (big discounts!) and we have rented many a times a bus with lounge seating (no bus style seating crap) and it even features a strippers pole lol. I know most here are beer drinkers but the Wineries in this FL region are a lot of fun... not to mention the sampling has you schmit faced in no time quick. BUT... that would take up valued ride time or most of an afternoon so i dunno about that one but it is the BIG thing to do here in our wine country.

[saturdays track ride note]

Everybody at this years track ride said "Hell YEAH!, were doing it again next year!" so if weather is good they're will be more riders...?? And the more the better, as said it is for charity :) BTW- the whole track is opened up including the Formula-1 "Boot" so the track is not only the 2.75 NASCAR miles it's also the extended boot making it a Road Course Racing 3.4 mile (ea lap). Depending on how many bikes we have will dictate the amount of laps we can log and grouped as such (more peeps = more groups = less laps :(

Camera's will be busy and you may want to split up your riding buddies so you can get shots of each other. This was a problem as all my friends went in the same group and we had no action shots. And Ohhhh wait to feel the banking! Combined with a normal ~45 degree twisty lean that we all do and love, you now are adding another 15 to 30 degrees of banking for an almost 90 degree side g-force thrill. The banking makes you feel planted and I literally almost creamed my panties :yahoo: The key is you need to NOT stage behind HD's and such. So staging is most important unless you want to putz. Your 1st lap will be a learn and discover lap anyway with more aggression forthcoming. You won't be able to go 160 down the straightaways as you do have turns that come up so quickly. It is certainly an experience to say the least. "Epic" is now so over used so I will use the word(s) "Glensational Orgasmic" AKA the... "GO".

Do you have an idea on when the track ride would be in 2013? Or did I miss it?

George
Come join us next year 2013 and as said were expecting for the 1st Saturday in Sept (or maybe the last Sat. in Aug) again. It was a HOOT! for sure :)

2012's was Saturday Sept 1st.. expect the same date/time for 2013. Looking at the calendar I'm seeing it as likely Saturday Aug 31st which is Labe-ah-day weekend. If so, then the Glen track ride would be in for that Sat, Letchworth and NY southern tier ride Sunday. Monday being the holiday would be ride home day.

We'll have to see, and as said it all revolves around the track run.

Het KJ you feelin ok??????? First all this silly BMW talk & now a ride report without any bikini shots??? I'm getting a little concerned! BTW count me in

Paul

I grew up about 5 miles from the brewery. We used to call them "Genny Screamers". One of the worst beers on the planet.

You should post up a picture of what the roads going through Letchworth look like in the fall. It's a parking lot, sort of like the BRP in NC.

Screamers huh? I guess just plain nasty with any nickname :assassin:

(OK, so watch somebody here -1 me for this lol!)

I'm planning on doing a fall foilage trip to Letchworth this weekend (weather?) I'll stop and snap sum pics.

@Paul... oh boy, there goes my bad-boy reputation  just cuz no bikini shots? lol.

If we do this as a group ride I plan on being a good boy (shusssh, I know u know the other side of me!). After all there will be "significant others" along that probably would not appreciate the bachelor side of me that would normally say... "hey, I arranged for some stripper friends to show up for the meet and greet!" JK! ;)

So where's the pics from Saturday's Letchworth SP ride??? From what I remember it was a pretty nice day...but not as nice as Friday (76 degrees). Lots of great color this past weekend, in that area

any follow up on this for 2013?
If we still have interests, yes we'll do it up! I have a few summer rides planned and this one is like a 1st or so week in Sept. (that is if y'all still wanna tie it in to the Glen track day). Letchworth St. Park is just getting it's colors in by then as well.
