sucketh a bit that the guarantee and return policy is 7 days from delivery

it has rained every day since...even this afternoon

forecast is for a break so loaded Isabella on trailer and heading for shop in Tylertown, MS in the morning to get there when they open at 10am

here's mine ready for the engine swap...will take the cover off for transport...it's there just in case of rain during the night

here's my instructions if someone wants to comment or post advice:

2004 Yamaha FJR1300A (no ABS)

Cerulean Silver (Blue Silver)

Swap engine – I provide Shell Rotella Synthetic Oil in the dark blue gallon jug (4 quarts) plus 1 quart

Remove air injection system and plug up holes (PAIR)

Replace shock

Replace tires – they are rotation unique – match new tires to position and rotation of old tires

Replace Valve Stems (alum racing gold stems provided)

– balance tires

Lubricate the drive shaft splines that plug into the final drive

I've Provided Yamaha Shop Manual

I provide crankcase oil, oil filter w/crush gasket, shock,, tires, valve stems, moly 60 grease

Get Iridium Plugs - if possible

NGK, Part Number: CR8EIX, Stock Number: 4218

Looks like below work would be done in the future:

Replace fork springs and appropriate fork oil (I'm 200# plus probably 30# gear) – haven't obtained springs yet

May be able to have them shipped to you shop from GP Suspension

Replace steering head bearings – bearings provided - if forks are removed to swap engine as I think they will,

then replace steering head bearings and fork oil

Torque Values

Spark plug = 13 Nm, 9.4 ft-lbs

Spark plug gap = .7 - .8mm (.028 - .031 in)

Front wheel axle = 52 ft-lbs.

Front wheel axle pinch bolt = 17 ft-lbs.

Front brake calipers = 29 ft-lbs.

Rear wheel axle = 90 ft-lbs.

Rear wheel axle pinch bolt = 11 ft-lbs.

Rear brake torque rod nut = 22 ft-lbs.

Stem Nut needs a 33mm 6 point socket

Stem Nut = Initial tightening = 37 ft-lbs.

Stem Nut = Final tightening = 13 ft-lbs.

You might add that the bike takes 4 liters or 4.25 quarts of oil, rather than just providing 5 quarts of oil.

Mike ~ I like the new avatar in the operating room! Let's all root for the next one in the recovery room, followed shortly thereafter by your old one, riding the hell out a rejuvenated Isabella!

Hope all goes according to plan. Keep us informed, huh?

Don

Hey Mike, what are the details of the new heart scheduled for transplant?

Year? Miles? Cost?

Maybe I missed that info somewhere else?

'05 engine $688 (586+102 shipping) with 10k miles as shown in above post EBAY ENGINE CLICKY

labor is $500 for the engine swap part
Damn dude! That's a smokin deal! All around. I would have been all over that.

Can't wait to hear your back up and running.

Damn Mike...didn't know it was a race, but I have a feeling you'll win. What shop time I can schedule for myself usually comes after 10-12 hour workdays, do I tire out fairly quickly.

What I do is set a goal for each session, like "tonight the final drive, rear wheel and exhaust system goes back on" and I stop when I finish the tasks I've allotted myself to do. I go 100 miles an hour for an hour or two, then collapse in a quivering pile. Then go do it all over again a day or two later.

Can't do anything Thurs. or Fri. night -- working late both days -- but have scheduled all day Saturday for myself, so I'll give you a run, but a shop wants to get their work done and out. Money in hand, y'know.

Anyway, it's great to hear you're heading back to FeejerBliss too.

Good thoughts comin' yer way.

'Howie

Good thoughts comin' yer way.'Howie
same to you, Steve, my friend

when we're both back on the road with some tested rides under our belt, maybe a weekend ride can be to Marianna which is halfway...I'll pick up Jeff_Q on his '08 in Biloxi who likes a good, long day ride

be a good way to get in riding shape for our SS1000 to get in the books finally

just a thought...my positive outlook is to think up riding plans even now :clapping:

great positive attitude! Keep going guys. Luck!

guess I should update here too...did so on Howie's thread already:

Hit 92 today on the way to MS to deliver the bike (89 now)...saw the engine sitting on the floor...looked good on the outside...at least everything was there including PAIR...starter, stator, clutch all there...really does look complete less fuel injection...even the back of the engine shaft protective housing was pristene :yahoo:

fingers crossed and sacrificed a chicken to the engine before I left...then ate the KFC in the van on the way home

well, now I got to thinking:

at the moment, I have no way to transport my old engine back home, and besides, no place to store it.

talked to the Graves boys (Graves Cycle Repair - damn, that better not be an omen :dribble: )

and they would be happy to dispose of the old, dead, powerplant at the dump. He also said he would pull off anything I wanted or left up to him to retrieve for me. I mentioned the starter, side covers (mine is unscratched unlike the new engine which went down to it's left and scratched the engine cover), new CCT I installed. Anyone have any suggestions. I guess I wished either I had access to a pickup or suburban to transport and a place to store...maybe in one of my Morgan garages in the back yard if I cleaned up a spot. Hate to think someone might have a ruined crank sprocket and I have a spare, workable crankshaft.

I dunno.

let's ride safe and be careful out there,

Mike in Nawlins'

You might need the stator some day, and maybe the regulator. I'd keep any parts they have to remove to get the starter out. Even the nuts and bolts could be useful at some point. I guess it depends on how much of a pack rat you are.

Pack Rat...moi ??? :dribble: AIW (angelic italian wifey) refers to me as a Pack Capibara (look it up...)

Let's see...I go and offer up a 100k mile stator to someone...huum...wonder what Karma that would bring...

'specially since it's running all this:

So Tim and Aaron Graves wouldn't look at my bike arriving on the trailer and run into the shop screaming like girls, I removed all the plastic, air horn, highway pegs, sliders, and any electrical stuff which would unplug and be put aside.

Dude, there is WAY too much value left in that motor, parts-wise, to toss it in a dump.

Someone in Louisiana needs to go get that sucker as a forum parts donor.

someone, huh... ??? Come get it..."Howie's really used...well used up FJR Engine Salvage Company"

just ordered and payed for GPSuspension fork springs to ship to the MS shop :yahoo:

they didn't think they'd have to remove the forks and could just "drop" the engine into the frame

well I suggested they just remove the wheels and forks (want them to replace tires, steering head bearings, & fork springs/oil anyway) and drop the frame onto the engine...they gave me a weird look at that statement...

showed me all the parts they have for FZ1's...I think they think everything about working on a FZ1 equates to the FJR :glare:

they even had a cool PAIR nipple seal er up kit with aluminum caps with set screws and the guarantee they will last forever no matter the heat of the engine...looked like they WILL work on the FJR...course probably $100 a kit

I wonder what they are gonna do when they get to the AVCC hookup to the old engine and then to the new.

I told them anything electrical or whatever periphial to the swap or tune up they didn't want to fool with, just leave it alone and I'll do that part. Maybe I shudda left them my 12" long 1/8" drill bit for drilling the tab on the throttle setup on the engine. <_<

wow...

Mike,

Howie's right. (whats the Steve stuff? Is that Howie's not on Radio name?)

Maybe you can drive down to fetch the bike with AIW, and have her trailer the scrap engine home? The only thing really out to lunch on your old mill is the head. Everything else is unknown.

But whatever you decide, I think you and SteveRadioHowie need to go out on tour together and just jump from forum-member-area to forum-member-area and do a lil' roadshow. I'd suggest that ionbeam join you on tour, but I know 1st hand that he is too damn busy.

You could call it the Travelling Phoenixes. If you could find a decent drummer I'm pretty sure you could charge admission. Either way, you'd get free food, booze and accommodations for maybe a year. And just think of all the weird asssed people you'd get to meet along the way.

How cool would that be?

Almost makes me wanna go out and grenade my engine...

(Nah... I'm just kidding)
