Welp, I drove her all summer. I didn't get the chance to ride her for my move from Biloxi to Dallas. So, I put her on the trailer and drove her up. Well, turns out, something worked its way loose, as when I backed into the driveway, hit a bump and down she went.

Damn.

Well, I got the replacement part, which is the upper right fairing. That's the damage minus a little on one bag.

So, I ordered the replacement part and I am in the process of putting it on.

Now, if you've ever tried to take the piece off, you will know what I am about to describe. There are three bolts under the fairing. One is up near the battery. Another is lower and with a little work, I was able get it out. However, the last one, I believe, connects the nose fairing to the right upper fairing. I cannot get to it.

What is the easiest/proper way, to remove this fairing? I need to get it off so I can get the new replacement on.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thomas

Take off all 3 upper fairing pieces and the headlight as a unit, then seperate the part you need.

Are you trying to replace the headlight cowling that the right mirror is bolted onto, or the right lower fairing? You remove the lower fairings by leaving the "nose" piece (that fits under the radiator) attached to the right lower fairing. Unscrew the two screws that attach the nose piece to the left lower fairing. Unscrew the screw underneath the bottom front tip of the fairing (directly below the radiator) that attaches lower left and right fairings. There are three screws that bolt the lower right fairing to the frame or motor. Two of them are behind the adjustable vent cover on the lower fairing. Search this forum for information on removing and replacing these adjustable vent covers. There is a black plastic panel attached to the leading edge of the right lower fairing below the headlight cowling. It is attached to the headlight cowling by two plastic pop rivets underneath the headlight. Remove these. Then remove the three metal screws above the seam where the right lower fairing joins the right upper fairing. If you gently tug at the right lower fairing, it will disengage from the upper fairing. You will have to disconnect the turn signal connector after you separate the right lower fairing.

If you have to remove the right upper fairing, you should get a Yamaha service manual so you can see where all the attachment points are. It is a major league SOB to remove the upper fairing/headlight cowling.

Finally, remove the three screw

It is the right upper cowling. I have basically removed everything I can see and feel. Things are very loose, however, I still have one connection point left. There is a little tension left in the middle of the nose. It feels like there might be a bolt behind the yamaha logo on the nose. I don't want to remove the sticker unless there is one there. I checked out the parts diagram on the teamalpine site where I got the replacement cowling, but I can't tell if there's a screw in there. Any advice?

if someone knows, please let me know. And yes, it has been a major pain to replace. Ugh.

Thanks,

Thomas

There is a screw that holds the center fairing to the headlight assy and it's only accessed from inside.

You MUST remove the 4 black screws that hold the headlight to the subframe and then take the upper section, headlight and upper side fairings off as an assembly. It makes the job much easier, you'll never get all the screws that hold the upper side sections out while it's on the bike.

Assemble the new side section to the center section and slide the whole unit back onto the bike as an assembly. Then it's only 4 screws to secure it to the subfrrame.

I had to replace my left side upper section and learned the hard way that it's much easier (only 4 screws) to get the whole upper section off as an assembly first. Then repair/replace and reassemble.

p.s. Mirrors and the windshield motor must be disconnected as well as a few other small items and electrical connections.

That's exactly what I said in the first reply to this post.

Why don't people ever listen to me?

Thanks. Looks like I have one more screen screw to find. Ugh. I never thought it was going to be this much work. Now, the big fear that I will have an extra screw over when I get near the end and have to take parts off to get it back where it goes! :)

Thanks again for the advice guys. :)

I did this procedure about three weeks ago. I was too lazy to remove the headlight assembly and was able to remove and replace it. There is one screw that is VERY difficult to reach, but it is possible. You need a very small allen rachet to access it.

I know the one you are talking about. Actually, there are two. One connects the upper fairing to the nose cowling. The second connects the headlight to the nose cowling.

Well, I finally have it all repaired. Perhaps tomorrow I will get a chance to ride.

Thanks again for all the advice. As posted above, it is much easier to pull it off with the headlight assembly.

My advice, for those who may have to do this in the future is simple. Start with the obvious four screws attaching the headlight to the sub-frame. Then mirrors and the screws holding the cowlings to the bike. Remove the glovebox from the assembly (be aware that you will need to open the glovebox to remove it). In addition, it is easiest re-installed open, as well.

Although I took it off with half the screws removed, which was a pain to handle as I had already gotten the screws removed before I got the advice, I reassembled it on my bench.

One other piece of advice. When removing the pivot hinges for the windshield, I found it much easier to do with the windshield in the raised position. However, once the screw is removed, the hinge is spring loaded and will go down. I wasn't aware of this and mine went "thunk". It didn't do any damage, but it could. So have a hand on it. It's not extremely strong, just enough to worry about.
