What’s “the box”

I have seen a thread or two were an area of the country, possibly out west, is mentioned and referred to as “the box”. Since I am fairly new and live in the eastern part of the country I am naive about this. Can someone clue me in as to we’re this is and why it’s called the box.

Located in north central Oregon. Borders consist of OR/WA state line north, hwy 97 to west, hwy 26 to south and OR/ID state line to east. If you enjoy twisty roads with little to no traffic, this is the place!

Wow I had no idea there was a nickname for this area, it's one of my favorites and I try to hit the Wallowas/Hells Canyon/Elkhorns every year...

There's a bunch on the map that I haven't hit, gonna have to get out there next summer... Hells Canyon Scenic byway isn't even on the map though...

In 2019 the tar snakes on Rattlesnake Grade were brutal, should be worn down enough now though.
