New rider here, so haven't learned much.

So I saw a video on the sports network. It looks to be a fairly 'standard' seating position and bars, smoother, roadlike tires but lots of suspension travel.

The race they were doing had them drifting around corners, and the track was half-pavement, half dirt. They would jump off these dirt obstacles and be able to land it.

Basically, those bikes and style of riding make me drool and I wanna keep those bikes in the back of my head for when I'm looking for a second bike in the not-so-near future. There were a lot of aprilias and ducatis that seemed to be in the forefront of this racing. Can someone throw me some names to look up (of the bikes) and is that sort of on/off road performance available pretty much stock or are those bikes so modified that the stock bike would never be able to handle that sort of cornering and offroad abuse? Thanks.

Alexi

PS - Not that I'm gonna go out and race/jump these, but it looks like it'd be a real freakin' "hoot" to use while commuting to and from work, and maybe if I find a SERIOUSLY twisty road, with some fire trails or gravel offshoots I wanna explore.

Sounds like a supermotard, basically a dirtbike with street oriented tires/rims.

They always do look like a ton of fun to ride, there are many youtube clips out there that are very entertaining B)

Yamaha and KTM both make 'SuperMoto' bikes.

Or you can get any dirt bike and toss on some street wheels.

And yes, they are a riot to ride in town. A few years ago I had a YZF426 that I added a WR stator/flywheel to and ran a headlight and tail/brake. Craigslist provided a very cheap set of SM wheels and rubber. I had to sell it after getting 3 tickets in 6 months. That bike made me ride like a complete hooligan. I mean like your worst stereotype hooligan. Having a bike that will power wheelie in 4th gear and can 'bunnyhop' curbs is never good for public safety.

That looks like the bike to me. The KTM 990 you sent looks AWESOME. I may have some trouble with my 30" inseam though. But I'm sure stuff can be worked out. And Wanderer, I'm already trying to talk myself down from curb hopping my way to shortcuts.....except maybe between parking lots to avoid some traffic and get to side roads........private property, right?

Alexi,

I have about the same inseam as you.... yep it is tricky but I am about to bend the Kickstand for more of a lean for easier access.

May the Force be with You!
