Hmmm, is something broke, or are you fixin' it just for something to do?

I'm just posting to hear the informed stuff to follow. I don't know anything about the counterbalance, other than I don't want to mess with it.

Basically just curious. I would guess that over time and miles that the CB could be adjusted or fine tuned, maybe not but I'm not fcuking with it just to see.

I wonder if someone out there has.

It's a common adjustment on older concours but I've never done it on the FJR.

Someone with a factory service manual can probably say for sure. If they are a service item, they should be covered. But they are typically set and forget at the factory for the life of the motor.

Back when I mounted an ST1300, there was much hoopla about adjusting them on that steed. Turns out, the only thing the adjustment does is to adjust the gear lash. Now this can affect the life of the gears of course, and it also affects the whirring/sewing machine noises the ST is so famous for. The procedure for adjusting the ST is detailed here:

https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/ST1300_b.html#Engine

But some people swear that adjusting them also affects engine vibrations. My engineering brain fails to see the reason or logic, but if you want some yucks, a heck of a debate thread can be found here. Just remember to pop some corn first:

Holy Defecation! Five minutes reading the ST forum and I wanna kill myself!

I thought most of YOU guys HERE are a bunch of anal fiddle-fuckers, adjusting this and tweaking that...those guys over there would try to adjust a wet dream!!

True that. After the ST, I've come to really appreciate the "shut up and ride, numb nuts" responses on here.

The counter balance adjustment has a direct impact on vibrations. If you have your engine apart make sure you line it up correctly before you put it back together or you'll shake the engine out of the bike. Otherwise, the screw adjustment seems to have such minor effect that no one touches it.

The counter balancers actually look so small compared to whats on a single it truly appears to be a very fine tuning point.

Between the crankshaft gear and counter balancer gear must be a space,When the Yamaha mechanics assembled the engine, they adjusted these.

When you have opened your engine or after many many miles with the normal wearing of the engine, this space becomes larger and then you can hear your engine more noisy..

Then you can adjust these again..You can see the steps into your service manual..

I have never adjust these in mine..

Correct answer! There is a front balancer, a rear balancer and two external lash adjusters. The counter balance weights are aligned inside the engine, the external adjusters are gear lash adjusters that control the balance gear spacing. The lash adjustment is only for noise control and once set will probably not be touched again during the life of the engine. Before anyone starts moving the adjuster, note that the position is determined by a torque setting of the balancer in the engine, then the front adjuster gets moved one alignment mark and the rear balancer gets adjusted two alignment marks. When setting the balancer inside the engine the pickup coil rotor must have the "T" marking aligned with the case split mark when piston #1 is on the compression stroke.

One final note on this topic. If some intrepid person is into the motor enough that they need to perform the counter weight alignment procedure there are two alignment punch marks on the balancing weight but the FSM only shows one punch. If a person were to accidentally align using the unmentioned punch mark the engine will run like a Sherwin Williams paint shaker. DAMHIK.

Now Howie.... You just know one of the pimpledinks here is gonna have to fiddle with it now...

It's the turbo lock. If you turn it clockwise three full turns it will engage the turbo drive gear for an extra 50 horse power. Thing is....gas mileage drops to about half.

As you so often do, you have hit the nail squarely upon its head. This is one reason I spend more time on this forum for Dad's FJR than on the ST forum for my own bike. You guys are (mostly) more fun.

I thought this option was only available in the faster 2003 models signed personally by Dorothy?
