All the stuff you guys say needs done on the FJR is kinda scaring me...
Whaddya mean?

....the whole island is only 147 miles circumference...<G> Dont' laugh, that's a full days ride here...
Not on an FJR ;)

I'm really anticipatiing gettiin the FJR...I hope it fits without any mods, cause there's a nice ride to Big Bend, Tx comin up at the end of April...
I sure hope you're not planning to ride it from Oahu. :haha:

You don't HAVE to do ANYTHING to this bike. We just like doing it! I would recommend three or 4 mods, thought as a minimum.

1) Replace the grips. I think Yamaha's grips were designed by the Inquisition.

2) Install under-grip heaters before installing the new grips. You can combine 1) and 2) by getting heated grips--Yam or aftermarket, but you gotta like the grips they come with (I don't)

3) Put on a Kisan SignalMinder if you want turn-signal cancellers (I do) and a Kisan PathBlazer to ward of the idiots during daytime driving

4) Install either Givi color-matched trunk or the Yamaha one.

Even so, the only thing I would ABSOLUTELY do without question is swap the grips and you'll have a SENSATIONAL ride! Everything after that just makes it better.

Ok, stuff, checking clearences etc on the valves, rear tires, shocks, all the farkles... you guys seems to fuss a lot with your bikes...

maybe I've been reading here too much! <_<

Well, it doesnt' make any difference WHAT bike you have here... the furthest you can go without stoppping, or a trafic light is either 30 miles on one freeway or 40 miles on the other freeway...on O'ahu... the Big Island of Hawaii is a totally different story, I love riding there.

One of the girls I ride with bought a new sportbike, wanted to ship it to the Big Island for the annual Labor Day rally...ok, got one week to break it in... started riding about 7 Sat morning, rode all the back roads and freeways combos, stopped at 8 at night... had a little over 200 miles on the bike...

800,000 peeps and 800,000 vehicles on this island... and it's only about 20 x 40 something square miles... that's not counting the tourists...<G>

naw, shipping my Harley to San Diego, ride to Ohio, pick up the FJR there, and hopefully ride that to Texas... kinda depends how the custom seat that's already on fits me....

Funny!

The FJR I'm buying... in Ohio... already has heated grips... :)

my Harley doesn't... maybe heated gloves are in order...<G>

Naw... us Harley riders are just too tough to care... ( ok... too cheap!)

but I am getting the heated jacket liner thru the group buy... hadn't found that brand before... looks good, and not bulky... it should fit well under my FirstGear jacket... and my leathers.... :cownoy:

Thanks

Mary

Finally one dealer (sells Yamahas, Harleys and dirt bikes) pointed to a Harley on the floor and said... sit on that..told him I didnt' want a Harley... but sat on it... it fit!  ...although I later changed the handlebars and seat.
-you sure it fit? :p

:D Hey don't care what kind of bike it is. As long as it runs and has two wheels. I started out on a Honda 50 and a Cushman way back when. Ridden every bike I could get a leg over since and loved every one of them. I have a HD I bought new in 88 and it looks better and runs better than the day I bought her. My friends think I'm crazy for buying a new FJR but I could care less. I just want to ride. PM. <>< :D

It's whatever turns your crank :p .....Harley...FJR...whatever B) I've had mine 2 seasons & the only change I made was a givi screen (1" flip @ top) on a friends advice (ironbutt rider out of Q Peter H) until I joined these forums  Now I've gotten sucked into seat with backrest, fork brace, braid lines (including clutch), heated grips, power port, sliders, foot guards  ..just to name a few farkles....better half just laughs saying "big boys with their big toys"...the bike is great just the way it is...it's just a guy thing (again according to the wife) so "hey" go with what works for you :D ...just enjoy B) ...okay I'll shut up now....

Oh ya...almost forgot....if you have any questions  these guys (girls) can usually give you the right answers :D (myself excluded :)

It fit way better (meaning more comfortable) better than any of the other bikes I sat on. Got a Mustang seat, and higher/closer bars... the rest of the stuff I did was for looks and a bit of power.

Ladies' arms are generally a bit shorter than guys of the same height... I'm only 5'6", dont' like to lean forward on a cruiser... my Deuce has forward controls, and I can flatfoot it easily.

I put risers on my Bandit too, also lowered front and back and shaved the seat.

No, I didnt' NEED to do that with either bike, but I like being comfortable, especially since we spend so much time here just sitting in traffic... I actually wont' ride my bike many times when I could, because of rush hour traffic, lane splitting not allowed here. Sitting in the hot sun for 2 hours to go 25 miles is not much fun.. Hawaii is about even with the bottom of the Florida keys, the sun gets really hot... I only wear a half helmet to keep the sun out of my eyes, still sweat enuf to need a shower when I get home.

Oh, dont' use sunblock on your forehead unless it's waterproof! i've used a clear face shield and still got sunburned...

It should be interesting to see how how hot the FJR is compared to the Softail... get your leg too close to the oil tank or the tranny and you've got a burn right thru heavy jeans...although might not be a fair comparison... the FJR does have the insulation under the tank... thanks to Gary...

Nothing wrong with that... there's a great forum...

https://forums.delphiforums.com/hawgryder/start

These guys are way into the old bikes... and a cool buch of peeps, I've met about 50 of them so far... will go to a couple more gatherings this summer.

Nothing wrong with the FJR either... I was thinking about trying to fix the Bandit for touring, but the FJR is already better set up for that, so... Besides, my 21 yr old kinda wrinkled the Bandit, a car hit him last Nov... the bike needs a few parts replaced, a good project for next winter... <G>

Your friends are just jealous...<G>

Several people I ride with have both cruisers and sportbikes, way fun! Like having both a convertible and a sports car!

Mary

braid lines (including clutch),..... sliders,
...and forward footpegs...

thsoe are the next things I want to add.... in addition to what's been done... <BG>

Think I'd better get sliders FIRST!

Oh yeah... has anyone put sliders or anything on the side of the hard cases?

Sliders protect the front, what about those expensive rear cases?

Just wondering...

Hehehe...it's not just a "guy" thing...

the ladies I ride with.... we talk about bikes and guys and bikes and shopping and guys and husbands and bikes and boyfriends and bikes and kids...

One of the gals recently moved to Texas, she was running ET's at the drags here, the guys in Texas wouldn't let her run with the guys the first time she showed up. Made her run with the girls and with the 650's an 750's... She wiped em out...Her nickname .... 9 second Jen.... She should get faster with the new Busa... :D

We do like our bikes!

I'm sure i will have lots of questioins once I get the Feejeer!

And the number one reason to own a Harley: Chicks dig 'em. I've yet to have an extracurricular women ask me for a nice, terrifying hop on my Jap bike.
Maybe not the bike then :D

I have both, love them both, they are completely different, ride completely different, serve completely different purposes. The HD is much more relaxed, no hurry. It's not as slow as y'all would like to think.

Chicks love both, in fact, I've probably had more young damsel's beg for a ride on my jap bikes than on my HD's.

 The bit I don't get is why there is some post on the forums at least weekly about "I hate HD's". Seriuosly, get a life. Don't like it, don't ride it. Who cares that you hate them?

+1 that attitude, just wish I had more garage space

krashdragon; if you want a good sampling of what fjr owners are like  ..you probably go to WFO 05 in Reno in July B) ...it seems to be turning into an international met :cownoy: ...o ya the better half says we should look you up next time we're in the islands..(every 2-3 years) (cause of business interests) she rides as well and thinks (after 25 years) you could possibly help her get me back under control (doubt it) :agent: ... if you get to Reno... maybe I'll see ya there (she has no interest in a 3 day 2500 mile ride) :dribble: ...I'm shutting up now..later

Ya want to know what it is about a Harley?

Well, first thing comes to mind with most people I meet they think they are the best.

Obviously this comes from people who either know nothing about bikes or they are referring to the bikes ability to be ridden long distances.

Now if such person has never ridden other bikes I can see where they would get that idea but I am here to tell you along with many previous and present Harley owners on this board that neither statement is true.

Now on to people who actually know something about bikes and still like their Harley.

Once you ride one and if you have ever ridden a Jap rip off of a cruiser there is absolutely no comparison. A Harley sound is perfect, the transmission while clanky feels like a machine under you and many people like that. Also the gearing is like nothing else for the highway. The revs of the twin with the now 6 speed transmission on some even the 5 speed at highway speed they just sail.

Harleys serve one nitch, one type of riding and for that particular style I have never ridden a bike that does it better.

With that said though I didn't want a bike that only did one thing great, I wanted one, like the fjr, that does many things very well.

The fjr handles very well, for its size it often times feels much smaller.

The power is addictive and when you really get into it she flies.

Obviously long distance and cruising is very capable.

To me the big deal with Harleys is they look great, sound great and cruise very well.

I just want a bike that did more and all.

To me a perfect world for me would be a Harley (I can rent one and do on occasion), the fjr and a sport bike.

Now for the sport bike I couldn't decide between a bike like the RC51 (twin) and say a R6 or R1 but it would probably be the R1 or the RC51 but you get my point...

I miss my harley.....what really sucks is that it is in pieces in my garage...engine in my kitchen. Just another outcome of riding 110 mph north on 360. Gotta love texas in the winter time. Had a buddy of mine and his girl following me on my feejer on that northbound jaunt. Forgot to ask them if they saw any screws or fire coming out of my pipes that night.

Uh.... not too much of all that is going to work!

I'm moving to Ohio... IF and WHEN my house ever closes.... (

but i do have friends here....oh, and my 2 boys...<G>

I checked the dates in Reno, I'm already going to a party in New Jersey that weekend, ( Hopefully the next get together....

" you could possibly help her get me back under control (doubt it)"

Hey..leave me out of that one! <_<

As far as rides, i'm planning on riding to Big Bend Texas, Muskogee Ok ,New Jersey, Allentown Pa, Madison Wi...Napa, Yuba City, Northridege , San Diego, LA, and a couple other towns in Cali...would like to squeeze in Hells's Canyon trip with some friends, too...

Oh and Marble Falls, Ar later in the fall.... I guess it used to be called Dogpatch...

... so I'm not much help for her on the ride stuff..<G> but I'm not going to do 3 IB's to get there... I'll take more like 5 days...also, much cheaper to pay for a motel room for 2 extra nights than one speeding ticket! <LOL>

Three days does not leave much time for sightseeing or shopping! Shame on you! :haha: She should just fly out and meet you there, ride and fly back...<G>
