 2008 A model. Near the battery and secured nicely but connected to nothing.

OK, I think I get it now. It's a generic probe and the ring terminal is for use in an some applications for mounting, but Yamaha elected not to use it. 

Told you I knew nothing.😀

What the dipshit Skooter said above. That is your ambient air temp probe. Do not connect something to it. It freaks a lot of people out because it LOOKS like it should be connected to something when, in fact, it is how it should be for the life of the bike.

 
They are all wrong.... trust me. 

It is a rectal probe.  When properly "mounted" it tells the ECU when you are about to crap your pants and the ECU limits the power output by 50%.  Use some good lube when you insert it (Yamaha requires the lube to be rated by the API as ***,  but that is a topic for another oil thread).
