What makes the high pitched mechanical whine?

Alternators can whine, but its the rotor in it that spins within the stationary stator. Applying additional electrical load can't make it spin faster because it is mechanically driven by the engine.
I'm not saying that it spins faster, but it definitely whines louder with a higher load. All alternators do. Grab a carbon pile load tester and try it.

 
The whine you hear is from straight cut gears. Straight cut gears transmit power with less power loss because they don't induce the lateral thrust of bevel cut gears. Don't worry, its a good thing.

 
My bike whines in all gears, but only under load (pull side of the gears). On coast, not so. Also, it's more pronounced in 3rd gear. Do others Gen I owners experience the same?

My 05 is about the same in each gear. Keep in mind, the noise you hear has nothing to do with the gear the bike is in as the actual transmission gears are not the rascals making the noise you hear... unless there's something REALLY wrong in there... however, you may feel that the bike makes more noise at slower speeds due to lack of wind noise which tends to blot out everything. I would think that higher engine speeds would translate to more gear whine... which in turn gets negated by the louder sound of the exhaust. Let's agree on one thing. All the sounds generated by the FJR engine are proof that it... IS... running and all is well. :dribble: Though it's got it's quirks (like every engine you can get for a reasonable price) you've got one of the best built motorcycle engines on the planet. Years of testimonies by those who've owned a large assortment of other bikes (before their FJRs) on this forum prove it.

That whining sound is an early sign that your second gear cog is starting to go...

...or it is running normally.

One or the other.

Fear not....

It sporadically happens on all of my bikes.... when I've had a big bowl of ham & beans the night before.

I consider this phenomena to be completely normal.. :stinker:

 
I noticed my FJR "whine" is much less pronounced than other FJRs, not sure if this is a problem?

 
I guess it is the stator whine. I've put 3,000 miles on the bike in a little over 2 months now. No change, so I'm not going to worry about it. Just sounds different than what I'm used to.

This bike is one of the smoothest running motorcycles I've ever ridden let alone owned. My buddy calls it "electric smooth" which I think is fitting. I'm amazed at how planted the bike feels at 75 mph - rock solid. The brakes are the best I've ever tested. It starts stone cold and in 10-15 seconds, you can pull the clutch and take off. Never had a bike like that before.

Guess I've jacked the thread a little...apologies.

The gear driven cams of a VFR with a nicely tuned Supertrapp.... in the wooded twisties - now that's a nice sounding whine!

 
If I am not mistake the balance shafts are gear driven. The sound I think you are talking about sounds like every Gear driven timing system I have put in small block v-8's. I think it is the balance shafts.

I'm not going with either. I'm just gonna with a WAG and say it's the wheel bearings going out and if you continue to ride it, you're either gonna crash and die, or something else, like old age or heart disease is gonna kill you. :assassin:

Vibrating, tipin' over, junk mirrored, piss poor seating, hot runnin', death machines.

I certainly agree with your suggestion Bust, but of course your argument only applies to the GEN 2's! jes' sayin' and nuff' said Bro'!
