Try riding in the cold and rain a few times. Also, the shield is horrible when fully up. Far too vertical, which creates turbulence, unless you are a midget.
That's why I came up with my angle tuning spacers, which means you need more height just to get the same amount of body coverage
I am not disputing that is what you get. Don't really consider myself a midget at 5'10". However my experience is no turbulence at all at any speed with the windshield fully up. I get some extra wind noise where it hits the top of my helmet, but that is no problem cause I wear ear plugs anyway.

Might be a case of not knowing what I am missing. Since I have never ridden an FJR with an aftermarket windshield. For now the stock windshield is fine for me.

You want to feel turbulence get a VT1300 Honda Interstate. I have one and it feels like it's going to shake my head off at certain speeds and wind conditions.

How high your head is while riding also depends on your body shape (where in your body your height is), seat and its position (aftermarket or stock, upper lower), and whether you use bar risers or not. I'm only 6'2" but more of my height is in my torso than my legs (only a 32" inseam). I have a Russell Daylong seat that raises me up somewhat. Because of these things I run a Helibars Riser Bridge.

With the stock windshield in the fully up position the wind blast would hit my helmet at about mouth level and, due to its steepness, creates a ton of turbulence that knocks my head around, making it useless. I can use the stock shield in the summer months only by keeping it lowered to hit neck level or below.

Here's a link to the mod I came up with to reduce the angle of the windshield throughout its range. It has been one of the best mods I've done on my 3rd Gen and cost me about $2.00 in parts. It works with the stock shield, the Touring shield, or pretty much any other shield that you slap on there.

That's a good idea Fred! Would cut down on back pressure? When I bought my '10 FJR last June and rode the 900 miles from Kalispell, MT back home on the OR coast I noticed how bad the buffeting was with the Yamaha touring windshield when I got into the Columbia River gorge about 60 miles east of Portland. I was down to 40 mph and still having a rough time. I replaced the Yamaha shield with a Cee Bailey with the reverse curve at the top. I think your modification would have done the trick and I could have saved some bucks. I actually began thinking about a mod like this a couple months ago but it was too late because I'd gotten rid of the touring shield and for some reason the Cee Bailey isn't effected.

A mod I did was to the stock seat. After about 2 hours the foam would begin to compress a bit which resulted in increased pressure on my tail bone. So, I carefully removed the staples holding the seat cover on and with an electric carving knife I cut out a V shaped piece of seat foam which totally relieved the pressure on my tail bone then reinstalled the cover carefully pressing the staples back from whence they came . I was thinking about a custom seat like a Russell but now the stock seat is fine.

Besides the helibridge and mcl lowering brackets, I negotiated a Yamaha touring screen (oem is a joke) when I bought the bike. I later went with a cee bailey barn door for winter. I like it, but could easily just run the touring all year. Top case is a must, as is FoboBike tpms. Everything else is a smart want. Like heated gear wiring. Givi tankloc ring Admore light bar. Switchable modulated headlight. RTI bag reflectors. Grip buddies. T-Rex bag guards. R&G sliders. Laam seat. I've run all the PR tires. 4GT's lasted longest. All were great.

This discussion came up just yesterday with a fellow FJR enthusiast, as we ogled a new 2017ES at the same shop I bought my current bike from. He asked how much I had spent in farkles on top of the price tag for the 2014ES. I told him that it was enough that I didn't want to add it all up, but in retrospect it was less than what I put into my '05 after purchase because I'd learned what I needed and also was able transfer some of the goodies from the Bass Bote Blue to the Ticket Me Red bike.

Model year is important: 2014 ES
