In the Gen I "Bin O Facts", there's lotsa info on the ticking among other things and even sound bites to hearhttps://www.fjrforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4295

Thanks guys, I'm starting to find my way around, but the link to the "tick" sound is definately helpful. Man, there's a lot of info here if I just shut my pie hole and read.
LOL - love it.

Every tribe has to distinguish one set of members from the other. In the FJR tribe, Gen 1 peeps claim shorter wheelbase, lighter weight, and a wee bit more power as the calling card to excellence. Gen 2 men claim no heat, better comfort, no ticking, refinement and elegance. Gen 1 peeps respond with no electrical issues, ignition switches that switch. Gen2 peeps retort that Gen1 guyz are so old and feeble they require Bozo-sized blinker indicators to see which way the thought they were turning before Alzheimer's kicked in - and that they are so fat that the additional 1.02 hp is insignificant.

:****: them all - Harley's are the best!

Geesh, I did not answer your question at all, did I?

I would look for the common motorbike issues first. You know the drill, leaky stuff (forks, shock, tank), worn stuff (steering head bearings, swing arm), overall condition (air filter, sample the oil, paint, what's it look like under the seats), tire condition, farkles, and blah blah blah.

Specific to a Gen1 - I'd look for heat control measures, and be very careful of a ticker. Yamaha, so far, I think, has been good at fixing tickers. But it may take some effort and downtime on your part. A Gen2 won't tick, but has other issues. IMHO, these issues are less than a ticker presents. Wait, then again, I had to have my gen2 head removed for 'carbonized valves'.

Still not much help, am I?

If the price is right, the bike is clean, take it to a local tech have it looked at then buy it.
