Hi Folks!

There were one or two checklists around for what to pack for a week long trip.

My wife and I are considering a ride from Massachusetts to Front Royal, VA, then to Deals Gap via Skyline and BRP. Ultimately will be visiting friends in the Nashville area. Probably in late May or June but timed to avoid the Hoot cluster-f*** and hopefully avoid the worst of the cold weather up north and heat down south. Our preference is to tent at nite, with perhaps a couple motel stays.

Anyone remember where those threads might be?

Thanks,

Pepperell

The list is simple...couple pairs of socks and underwear.....should about cover it.

Pepperell:

If you're packing your wife AND camping gear on your FJR, good luck. Unless you're towing a trailer or have the concept of traveling light down to a science, your sidebags [and tail trunk?] are going to fill up real quick. I always struggle with this.

Anyone familiar with the "Constant Loss Clothing System"? Works for me.

Yeah, I looked at that list and feel that if you take what's on it or anything close to what's on it, the weight will keep your bike from moving at all. Along with the fact that you won't use 70% of the stuff you take.

Me?, I go on at least 2-six thousand mile trips a year and have made a science of what to bring and what not to bring. Here's my list for you.

A. Tent: Must be as light as possible and only big enough for the 2 of you. Spend the big bucks and get one that's about 2 to 4 pounds and packs down to about a foot or so.

B. Clothes:

1. 2 pair of jeans / one on and one off

2. 1 longsleeve tee shirt. You will buy a shortsleeve one at Deals Gap or some other place so don't take one with you.

3. 1 longsleeve shirt

4. 1 pair of boots {must be comfee enough to wear all day long}

5. 1 rainsuit but gortex outfit for rain or no rain will be even better

6. 1 toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.

7. 1 heavy coat iffin you don't have the gortex outfit

8. 1 small flat fixing kit from Walmart. 1 small 12 inch bicycle hand pump from over in the childrens bicycle section.

9. 1 baseball cap for when you're not on the bike

10. bike tools

11. bike lock

12. map

13. Underwear: For you, take 7 pair of your worst underwear; the ones that you should have thrown away. And, every night throw the ones you had on in the trash. Now when you get down to 2 pair left, stop at a dollar store and pay 6 bucks for about 5 new pair. Now keep the new ones and they should take you back home.

For the wife, they are thin and will dry easy so she wash or whatever.

In closing, for anything that you might ask me "should I bring", I would answer you by saying that "There is a freeking Dollar Store on every corner in every town that you will pass thru". You even see them from the highway. And, ANYTHING that you feel that you need, just stop in and buy it. Check-it-out?

*****Cold meds They got

*****Shower shoes / they got

*****Chips, dips, penuts / they got

*****a pair of shorts / they got

*****a nother pair of jeans / they got

*****hit a cold spell and want a heavy sweatshirt / they got

Remember: Anything and everything that you pack on that bike will be in your way everytime that go looking for something. Think smart, think light and remember that whatever you forget, you can get at a dollar store for a dollar.

OH', MY GAWD EYE FORGOT YOUR SOCKS!

I read this to the wife and said I don't have any underwear like that..................

She offered to help me pack.

Wally world is my safety net. When we plan a trip, I look on line for the nearest store to where we're spending a few nights. Wal-Mart sells EVERYTHING. Also make note of where the nearest bike shops are too.

One trip, I unexpectedly needed brake pads for my VStar. The local dealer didn't have any and sent us to a place over 250 miles away. We asked him to call the dealer in a town 70 miles away, and found some there.

To save space, get 2 pair of Ex-Officio polypro boxers. Wear one pair during the day when riding, the 2nd once you've stopped and showered. Wash the first pair in the shower, roll 'em up in a towel and step on the towel. Then hang to dry. That pair will be dry in a couple hours. I took 2 pair on a week long trip and had fresh, clean underwear every day. And there's only 1 pair in your bag taking up room!

Thanks for all the replys!

We did the Skyline back in 1981 on an XS750, so I'm not too concerned about overloading the FJR. We travel light, won't bother to carry much besides clothes, tent, sleeping bags, air mattress, no food. Only tools I'll take will be a tire repair kit. Lock and chain weigh too much, I'm insured. Probably wear my mesh jacket plus the rain suit. I can layer a sweater for warmth if needed. I have comfy riding boots plus sandals for the shower. Oh, yeah, I usually carry a 6' piece of hose, a little dish detergent and a sponge for cleaning the windshield. I usually take along some towels; these can be used for pillows, thrown over the seat to keep it cooler in the sun, as well as the usual duties.

As someone mentioned earlier, Wally world is your friend.

OH', MY GAWD EYE FORGOT YOUR SOCKS!
I can't believe nobody's mentioned the "Travellin' Light 3-Sock Routine"? It goes like this: Take only 3 socks (one and a half pair). Wash one every morning at your camp/motel and tie it to your h/bar or mirror for the day's ride. Every morning put a clean sock on your left foot; take yesterdays left sock and put it on your right foot; wash the sock that was on your right foot. Continue to rotate. ;)

Socks: I don't carry anymore than 3 pair at most because I wash them at night and hang them off tha tent to dry during the day if I will not be breaking camp.

If I will be breaking camp, then in the morning when I pack-up the bike, it loop them under a bungee cord and stard riding down the road; Then, by the time I have gone 100 miles or so they are dry. I then put them in my bag.

For My Panties: Sometimes I DO just take about 4 pair and wash them at night just like my socks. And, hang them on the tent to dry or bungee like the socks while um riding down the highway. Can't nobody look at them and figure out that they are underwear flopping in the wind.

I can't stand to have some funky panties in my bags....Mine or yours!

So that was U I saw on the interstate w/underwear flopping off the back of the bike, looked like a wind sock, thought to myself--self, dat dude must be a LSU grad, got a nice feejer like mine and he's using it as a clothes line, airing his dirty laundry, now mind you, I would not have been so critical should your girl hung her bra and panties, that may have added a little class and would have been a bit more socially acceptable

Better yet, just don't wear any underwear and save that space for the Crown Royal. Works for me!!!!
