Senator Mike MonroneyIn the United States, all new automobiles are required to include an official form listing certain information about the car; this window sticker is commonly called a Monroney sticker in the industry (or simply a window sticker), named after Almer Stillwell "Mike" Monroney, the Oklahoma senator who sponsored the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958.

The sticker is required to be affixed to the side window or windshield of every new car sold in the United States. A fine of US$1,000 per vehicle is applied if the sticker is missing. The act does not apply to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 8500 pounds (3856 kg).

The sticker must include the following information:

The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP)

Engine and transmission specifications

Standard equipment and warranty details

Optional equipment and pricing

City and highway fuel economy ratings, as determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

In a similar vein: for about a dozen years NHTSA has required "parts content information" -- country of origin (by % of parts, by price) -- displayed on the window sticker -- on all new automobiles. Studies have shown that most Americans are ignorant of any of this and continue to either buy American (or, 'foreign') primarily by 'marque', brand name, or some other un-researched method.

One of the tenents of successful capitalism is an informed and educated consumer -- no wonder Detroit's in such dire straights....!

At least, we're ahead of the curve -- here on the FJR Forum......

I haven't seen the "TWN butt plug" fee either so I can't conclude it's included. In fact, I have to assume it's not included and that whenever we buy another FJR we'll all be charged an extra $9.95...or $9995....or whatever and have to pay it.

I just visited a dealer for Brand X and noticed on the sticker was the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Then, added on, was 'plus shipping and setup charges' which were not itemized.
What does Yamaha include in their MSRP? Is the freight included and equalized, e.g., a standard amount added on to every unit by Yamaha so no dealer has a geographic selling advantage? What about setup?

No, your link only states that it's included in the dealer invoice. That is not the same as the MSRP, which is the original question's basis.

Nope, because MSRP is not a direct function of Dealer Invoice. MSRP is arbitrary, whereas DI is not. Further, in some states, direct freight cost (meaning; if delivered by an independent carrier to the dealer) is not an actionable item (meaning; non-taxable) and if the dealer does not apply a mark-up to the freight cost. Given that, freight is a separate line item and therefore not included, rather, added to.

Okay, I think I'm with you -- freight & set-up amount to 'red herrings' and, really, have nothing to do with MSRP -- which is nothing more than a price put 'out-there' for (mainly) comparison shopping purposes. What we all really need to know when shopping is DI and what his costs are. MSRP may be important in taxing and, certainly, dealer holdback and, probably, in overall general sales advertising.

We also need to know if Dealer Invoice is the same all over. Or do single line (Yamaha only) dealers get a lower price; or, something like "Gold Award" large volume dealers get extra discounts (probably?). If DI is the same all over then it behooves the shopper to buy one from the guy selling 'out of his garage'. The bigger/more profitable looking dealer will, most likely?, have higher overhead and his cost per vehicle will be higher. If Dealer Invoice is, as 'MTrider' stated, $11,752 and freight can't be counted and you subtract the 'holdback' the dealer gets later; then, $11,115* is the dealer's cost of a 2008 FJR1300A. Everything you pay over that is either dealer profit or shipping costs (if any) or set-up costs (if any) or some other paper-work costs -- or, taxes.

*This number may be lower if dlr. qualifies for some 'special plan'....?

Back to the beginning folks: MSRP stands for Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. What dealer invoice is or whether F&S allowances are included in dealer invoice has nothing to do with what the mfg "suggests" a retail customer should pay or whether they "suggest" a retail customer should pay additional freight and/or setup fees.

Currently mfgs are mum on this - simply put, they don't say exactly what they're "suggested" price includes. And they're not subject to any of the regulations passed for car window stickers so they're not required to specify what a suggested price includes. And finally, it's all academic anyway as a suggested price is strictly an academic exercise done by the mfg and carries no weight or lawful intent in any negotiation conducted between the dealer and the buyer.
