What's this on my '04?

Thank you, ionbeam. Now I believe. The second rubber band (the flat one) is currently holding my tool kit. I see that it was not originally intended for that purpose.
Assuming that your FJR still has a tool tray (box), the tool kit should be held in place by a short flat rubber strap at the back of the box. The strap is supposed to be riveted to the floor of the tool box and there should be a metal tab that the strap hooks on.

Nope, the metal tab and rivet is gone on my bike. Tool kit is being secured by the rear rubber band under the pillion seat (where the aftermarket alarm would be in the catalog photos).

One photo from the collection in "wheatonFJR goes down" on you thread. Other photos there...including photos of my new-to-me '04 just purchased...since the Ins Co totalled my '04 and IL law says I can't buy it back.

Back on topic....not even that little bungie thingy could hold it all together I guess. :)
