Found a super clean 2007 with about 600 bucks worth of farkles (the ones I like too) and 3000 miles on the clock for $1600 less than a brand new 2008 model with a factory warranty. Both are good deals and less than book value. Both are 1300A models. Both are out-of-state so I can't ride them before I buy. Which one should I buy? Once I buy the bike, I intend to ride it until the wheels fall off.

Opinions?

Wellll....Yep, that's the one I'd buy! :dntknw: :confusedsmiley:

It depends on how you value the farkles compared to the warranty. There's no way we could know what "peace of mind" you need.

I'd buy the '08. In six or eight months it would be easier to compare. One the one hand you've got a used '08 on the other an '07. I would guess that the '08 would be worth at least 1600 more than the '07. The '07 would have 3000 more miles, a few farkles and an expired warranty.

For a lot of buyers, farkles are like tires. You may have just spent 400 bucks on new tires and the potential buyer will look at your bike and say, "okay, it's got good tires." If you need tires, then it's the reverse; deduct the 400 buck.

If you have to finance any portion you will probably be able to get a better interest rate on the new one.

Good luck in your decision,

Bob

A savings of $2200 just for picking the used one! In today's economy you could no doubt use that money. That savings is enough to get you through the warranty that you would get with the new bike. Plus, you don't get hit with the massive depreciation from buying a brand new product.

You know how dependable and well made the FJR is. If you bought the used one you would be more than happy and you would have the satisfaction of knowing how much you saved.

From the farkles alone you can tell that the bike was cared for and broken-in properly. I'd say get the used one and go ride! :)

I just bought an 07 with 8k on it I looked at a 08 and even thought about waiting for a new 09 but for the money I saved I can buy many extras for the 07 it is like new. And I didn't have to wait to ride. :clapping:

I don't see how you can have it both ways. Either the $2200 is being spotted for the possible warranty need, or the $2200 is the depreciation that you don't have to take yourself.

If we're rationalizing though, don't forget to add in the extra sales tax that you won't have to pay by buying the 07, and if you live in a state that taxes your vehicle every year (like MA, VA, and a few others used to do when I was young), starting a year older is a plus on the annual value tax.

In the present economy, I think that the absolute prices are more important than the value of the savings.... and as pointed out by someone else for the tires, farkles generally don't add value at the time of sale except to the overly enthusiastic.

Earlier this Fall the 08's were running around $12K. They're definitely leftovers now, even if they weren't in September. They should be creeping down.

Meanwhile, Kelley Blue Book trade in on an 07 would be $7330 and retail at a dealer providing services would be $10375 in my neck of the woods. The price between two private sellers should be negotiable somewhere in between these.... And from what I've seen in the economy, you might be looking at something like maybe in the high 8's to low 9's.... and certainly the possibility of high 9's from a dealer on a used 07.

I dunno, me, I'd buy a new bike (warranty!!!!) With that said, I got what I believe was a great deal on a new 07 AE back in October. Bike ran me 10,900. Other dealers I looked at were getting between 12,900 and 13,800 for the same machine, with new ones running 16k.

I was back at the dealers last friday and they still have one on the floor (07AE). If you're interested, call Abernathy's in Union City, TN and ask for Gary in sales (731) 885-1792. Tell him the guy from Kentucky sent ya! I drove 230 miles to the dealer and it was well worth it-enough so that I take it back there for service!

In my experience farkles add very little to no resale value to a motorcycle. They can make it easier to sell but only if the seller remembers point number 1.

Is the used one a private party sale? If so, check with your state to see if you have to pay sales tax on it or not... Here in NV, they just changed the law so that you do not have to pay any taxes on private party sales.... Depending on your state, that could be close to $1k in savings.

I say buy the USED one IF:

1) it is like new.

2) a good deal price wise.

3) and still under warranty...then buy Y.E.S. from D&H (you probably should anyway).

Taking the initial depreciation hit is something you should avoid if at all possible.

The way I see the farkles, the fact that they don't add resale to the bike is a good thing in this case and that's why I added them into the value.

If these are just the farkles you like and they're not going to come with the new one, then you're going to have to get them for the new bike, maybe even at higher prices.

The fact that they're already on the used bike and you essentially don't have to pay for them is the value.

If and when I sell mine (shudder), someone's going to get a bike with some perfectly installed, choice improvements. That's just the way it goes I guess.

The only way i would buy the used is with a y.e.s . no y.e.s no deal . new bike zero miles purchase a y.e.s for 300 bucks and dont have a worry for 5 years .

Well, I bit the bullet and got me the used one. It doesn't have any std warrenty remaining so its doubtful that I could get the YES warranty now, right?

Anyway, thought I'd share some photos with y'all. A member of this board pointed me in the direction of this bike. I can't rember who that was but I bagged it for 9K with farkles.

Wait for the 09 and get the bike new. Buy it from D & H in Alabama and ride it home. They will pick you up at the airport and have the bike waiting for you for much less than you would pay by going to your stealer.

Congrats on the FJR. Looks puuuurty. And 9k sounds like a damned reasonable price.

I hope you get half the enjoyment I have gotten out of mine.

Edit: Duuuuuude!!!! Isnt that the 07 FJR they had for sale at BMW Motorcycles of Scottsdale? That's my stompin grounds. From the piccies, that looks to be the place. I was there today and thought the FJR was still there. What's up? Was THIS the post that sent you that way?
