While we're on the subject of speed

My buddy had an Aprillia Futura ST and a Honda Superhawk 996, my FJR pulled them both off the line, through the midrange and absolutely stomps them on top end, to the point of being about 12 mph faster on the top.

We had several flat out runs across Oklahoma in the summer on the way out to the MotoGP and he could not stay with the 05 FJR, now, get him in the twisties through Taos and Silverton/Moab and he could stay in front.

He told me I needed to fit knee sliders to the FJR's hard bags as I was about to ground them through the corners.

Such fun,

Skippy

Speed Kills
No..

Speed Thrills...

This is always taken out of context for some reason. Just as some will say if your chute does not open , the fall will kill you. It is not the fall. It IS the sudden stop.

Speed does not kill...it usualy is the sudden stop...

Thus... hitting a wall at 60mph will kill you just as dead as hitting a wall at 130mph.

Like a VTX, Vrod, or Warrior? Having only ridden the Warrior....the FJR romps it bad in a power dept.
My dad has an 04 warrior that I rode quite a bit before getting my 05 Feejer (and we'll still trade-off sometimes if we're out riding) - it's a hell of a bike and a lot of fun, but it's got absolutely nothing on the FJR.

Don't think I have heard of anyone killed by sudden acceleration or travelling at high rates of speed. The shuttle astronauts travel at approximately 17,000mph. Apollo crew members traveled in excess of 22,000mph.

I have heard of many, many, many people killed or injured by sudden or immediate decelleration.

Back on the 0-60 mph thing, almost any bike with more than around 75 RWHP is traction- and wheelie-limited up to 60 mph, so all big bikes have about the same 0-60 times of around 3 secs, more or less. It's like braking distances - almsot all bikes can lock either or both wheels, so braking distance becomes a test of tires, not of brakes.

If you see variations in 0-60 times for big-hp bikes, it's almost always things like tires, wheelbase, front-rear weight bias, and rider skill, not differences in hp.

Wax poetically about V65's and V-Max's but they'd all get smoked badly today by most any big-bore, especially the liter-class sport bikes and the big GT's. 90 RWHP was a big deal back in the 80's, but today's 600's are making low-100's. The new R6 should break 110, nipping at the heels of the FJR, albeit having to rev to the moon to make this level of power. It is unbelievable how much faster todays' bikes are, in every class.

Liter bike, shmeeter bike. Until you have crawled on a big H-D V-Twin powerhouse like the V-Rod or a CVO SCREAMIN' EAGLE Twin Cam you have never been on a REAL bike. And did I tell you about the CRAZY, I MEAN CRAZY! low end torque??? And you just can't beat the resale!

:D ;)

Had a Warrior just before my Feejer. It was Stage IV equipped and I think it could stay reasonably close behind in a straight line from 0 to about 45 or 50.

What the Warrior had over my FJR was that tremendous raucous V-Twin, bellowing from its racing exhaust system.

Sure that's why the NHRA allows up to 200cid and 600# max weight for the V-twin pro-stock bike while it limits the Suzuki's to 91cid and 595# max weight.

Anybody can make a pig fly with enough cubic inches... :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

FtLFrj, you mean they "handicap" the competition to make the H-D competitive??? No way! The Motor Company would never stand for that! They would want to compete straight up with no help. Besides, a Stage XVLIIX Screamin' Eagle Kit and some open pipes and anything in the H-D line is unbeatable. :aaevil:

John,

You seem like such a nice guy in person  .

You must have cabin fever already  .

I'm tellin' my wife how you've changed, and I'm gonna' make her read your recent posts. THEN you'll be sad!

LOL,

Shane

The VMax started life as a 145hp motor in 1985. It stayed at that output through 1986. When it made its return in 1988 it was detuned to 133hp due to emissions and noise regulations. It was dropped further to 125hp in 1997, again at the behest of the EPA. The ’85-’86 bikes are the fastest and they get a little slower as you come forward in time. The 1985-86 have moved into the collector status already.
John

Agreed on the VMax. I had a 1986 model, this bike was fast. I changed out the tires and added Conti's which were very sticky at the time. I got my Vmax up to 150 mph showing on the clock. Sold that one and bought a 1992 VMax and was I surprised at the difference. Still had a lot of kick and was up to ~145 mph on stock tires a few times. Niether bike handled worth a crap.

I demo'ed a BMW K1200S 3 weeks ago, nice bike. Good power and lots of it, have yet to try a FJR, maybe soon. :)

A friend had an '86 for years, then replaced it with a 1999. He said the power drop was noticeable but that it was still "one hell of a ride!" A couple of riders around here have nitrous versions with chain drives and extended swingarms, one has all that and a turbo! A very unique exhanust sound when he pulls up. The FJR has nothing on it in the heat department. Says the turbo damn near fries his right leg from the heat! But it goes like hell!

God, I love these speed numbers.

I can remember when I took on a Black Bird 1100 with my Honda Trail 90.

We both took off at the same time. 50 feet down the road the BB hit the 4' high bolder at about 100 mph, :haha: I climbed over it at 10 mph!

I'm now home with the chicks. The other guy is still up on the rock, and the real black birds are feeding him to their chicks!

Speed doesn't always win! :rip:

That's pretty funny. Of course, you could just click the "quote" button in the upper right corner of the post you want to quote.

Or maybe not.
