I'm getting word that I may be laid off in a few months or be asked to go part-time. I'm very thankful to have the job and the money. When I took this job in Oct 2007 I've been working long and stressful hours. The hard work has paid off in that management sees me as valuable and will probably let me work part-time. But I'm bummed that hard times are coming. The years before I got this job were financially slim and I hope I don't have to return to that life.

Who else is laid off or about to be? How are you dealing with it?

Got laid-off 4 months ago. I worked for an automotive supplier in the

Detroit area. My '06' FJR is for sale, and i'm trying to finish the internet.

Its going to be a long cold winter.

My company, YRC, inc., is on the endangered species list. At least I've achieved "full retirement" age. Unfortunately full retirement is a substantial pay cut. I'm tired and ready to "downsize" as necessary.

Hang on to your hats....It's going to be a rough ride. BTDT

Join the club, baby.....whatever you do....don't go into aviation..........

Nov 30th was it for me. I will survive and do whatever to pay the bills. I downsized 3 years ago when I saw this coming dropped almost all my debt and deal with cash only. As a single old fart it is easier than when I had my late wife and kids to take care of too.

My airline laid off nearly 300 pilots two months ago. Luckily I have enough seniority to where I didn't get sent home.

It wasn't like that in 2001. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, I was laid off for a year and a half.

The best advice I can give you is to try to maintain a positive attitude, to start looking for a new job as fast and as hard and you can. Work hard on it and it will keep your mind off the worrisome details. Apply for unemployment benefits. And be proud about it, the fund you will draw from is created from YOUR money that you have earned. Its your money, so use it until you get another job.

Many of my fellow pilots went back to previous jobs, a few went to work at Home Depot. We all took odd jobs, sometimes 2 or more part-time jobs. And for some reason, a whole lot of babies got made in that year and a half. :) Go figure.

Good luck and let me know if you ever need a chat.

Babies got made?....Dang....wish I was part of that....oh, wait, maybe I was.............

dangit.

I was laid off in July - this was my 6th layoff since 1994. I know it is now worse than it has been in the past but there are jobs available.

First thing I would do is get that resume out of the way so you will be prepared to submit it when something appears.

My first layoff was from a company I had put 17 hard years into. Lots of travel everywhere on the planet to service computers and materials testing systems. The layoff was a killer for me. It took over 3 months just to get a resume finished.

Oh ya - I had also just bought a house in June that was way out of my price range (my wife at the time just had to have a 5 bedroom) and in July I was laid off. Cobra was also tough to manage.

Did find a job just after the 3 months it took to get the resume done.

Went into a small medial outfit and after a year go laid off after they had me working 18 hour days for a week as they laid others off - then they showed me the door.

Did some contract work and then another job after another 5 months. IT position in banking this time. Should be safe.

Not so - three years; bank made some real bad deals - many managers let go and other workers laid off.

Finally I'm getting used to this... Had my resume all caught up and got another job in software test right away.

It's now 2001 and bad times again - another layoff. Now each of these layoff's was for 10% or more of the work force so I'm pretty sure it wasn't just me.

Now that last layoff was in April so I took the summer to do nothing but riding here there and everywhere... Good for the soul.

Next was Roxio for more software testing. Within a year Roxio bought Napster and we were closed down and sent out.

Must say that was one of the best layoffs since they let us stay for almost 3 weeks, allowing us to use all the computers ansd printers to do our resumes and job calling. Then they gave away much of the computers, software and furniture to us.

This last job I didn't really want but it was October, getting cold and I hadn't put out a resume. Dang if they didn't hire me even after I asked for a raise after I got the offer. Got the raise and somehow 5 years passed faster than the FJR finds it's way around a hairpin.

This last layoff was a bit of a surprise but I had also been saving 'layoff money' in CD's just for this event.

So the final result is I got laid off in July - been riding all summer, fall and into November. Found a 2005 FJR just last Saturday and snapped it up. Too bad I could only get in a couple of dozen miles - It snowed on Sunday and it's now icy roads.

Sorry if the long rambling doesn't interest you but hang in there. Get your resume in presentable shape, make sure you got a suit pressed if your in the job type where it could help, exercise to keep the stress in check (very important) and finally don't let little things stress you out - if you spill a beer just wipe it up without a word and open another.

And most of all as someone else already told you - collect that unemployment. Also check into Displace Worker Programs.

Best of luck to you - you are not alone. It's going to take some time but things will get better.

Hang in there. It's going to be a long recovery but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My company has been 'restructuring" now for almost 3 yrs. Every quarter I keep expecting the grim reaper to show up at my door but I have been lucky so far. 75% of my old dept. is now gone and I know some areas that are 100% overseas now.

The first round of layoffs was huge and very public as in managers with 'lists' waiting at the doors to catch people as they came in so they never even got to their office. That got too much press and was too visible so now the cuts are in small pockets here and there. You only find out when you go to call for some info and find out they aren't here anymore.

I dont know the exact figure cut but I do recall not too long ago having to park in the boonies if you weren't there by 8am. Now, you can pop in at 8 and pretty much park up front.

2009 is going to be an interesting year for sure.

First layoff August 2006 after 35 years with same company.

Second layoff May 2008 after 15 months.

Currently temp hustling packages for Fedex. Job ends 15 January or sooner.

Parents taught me to save for a rainy day. Best advice I ever got.

Still got a few good years left  in me, so I'll find something.

Good luck to everyone and keep the faith baby. B)

Man, my heart goes out to you guys. To do job cuts right before the holidays is just wrong. My best friend of 30 yrs is waiting to find this exact same news. He just got married in aug, and took a salaried position w/ the company he had been a consultant for 10 yrs with in july. He says they are laying off 20% of the company, after they cleaned 10% out in october.

I love my job normally, but times like these the peace of mind is equal to 10 times my pay. I just hope all of this **** clears up quick for all those affected.

Hang in there, it's not pretty anywhere.

We're currently doing all we can to keep our heads above water and avoid a 'down-sizing' but it may not be avoidable.

I could be on the street in a month or two. Time will tell.

Back on track... after the Holidays it's bye bye :bye: to our inept General Manager, Head of Sales, and HR director... 18 months of giving away product caught up with em.

Good Riddance!

Our company has let over 50% of our site go over the past year. My division got the axe notice three months ago. Layoffs came in waves with myself at the tail end. Fortunately I've managed to establish enough of a reputation outside my division that I got hired on by another division that is making money and doing well. I have continued to focus on increasing savings and reducing expenses...especially recurring expenses. I can't say that I didn't wonder how much road time I could get in if I was laid off at the beginning of riding season though.

The sad part about this is that the more companies cut back, the fewer employed people there are out there with money to spend to get this whole thing rolling again. Doesn't help I suppose that others with jobs, like myself, are not focused on building reserves over buying new toys.

It really is disturbing to see so many quality people out of work. Just last year I had to look for months to find a qualified developer. Now I get a stack of resumes each week.

Just got a call from the wife. She has been putting in 40+ hour weeks as an Xray tech since she graduated in August. Just got told on her new schedule today that out of the first 17 days in January she is working 6. Doesn't help that her student loans are going to be coming due in February to the tune of $300 - $500 monthly payments! So needless to say, I'm putting in as much OT as I can and am gonna start looking for a PT job. Look out McDonalds...here I come..

Yeah, in the spring I was toying with leaving my current job for a new one in an effort to become 'master of my own domain'. I figured with all the looming cuts I was going to take control of my own destiny.

I had a couple of good offers and was seriously mulling it over but then I started to get word of several other co-workers who had done the same thing who were then laid off soon after starting (FIFO I guess).

I figured in the end I was at least, if not more secure where I was which doesnt say a lot but I figure I will just ride it out as long as I cana nd hope for the best.

It just seems a matter of time for those of us in the construction industry. I will have work for at least another few months. But after that who knows. I don't think too many of us have enough saved to weather this storm. Doesn't look too good. Maybe I can get one of those jobs that a certain community organizer is gonna give out starting in January.
